Told almost entirely in flashback, the film concerns an already legendary 40 year-old pitcher, Billy Chapel, pitching the last game of his career that also marks the end of what has been, at best, a mediocre season. Going up against the Yankees, Billy remembers, while on the mound, his failed affair with the woman he still loves (Preston). As the game unfolds and it becomes apparent that he's on track to pitch a perfect game, Billy begins to wonder if he can win her back, and if his ailing arm can make it through nine innings. [More]

For Love of the Game is painless, but it's also pompous and pious about baseball in a way that doesn't mean much to a non-fan like me. Full Review |

While For Love of the Game has much to recommend it, particularly Costner's strong, understated performance, Raimi throws too many unnecessary curves. Full Review |

Costner baseball flick is great at motion, not so hot at emotion. Full Review |

The copious footage devoted to Billy and Jane's encounters might have been easier to sit through is there was any magic between Costner and Preston, but they're acting in two different films. Full Review |
