Consensus: Though Fracture's plot is somewhat implausible, the onscreen face-off between Gosling and Hopkins overshadows any faults.

In director Gregory Hoblit's 2007 thriller, FRACTURE, one thing is clear--highly successful engineer Ted Crawford (Anthony Hopkins) has shot his wife (Embeth Davidtz). What is not clear, though, is how Willy Beachum (Ryan Gosling), an assertive assistant D.A. on the verge signing with a major law firm, will convict Crawford, since the calculating suspect is masterfully exploiting legal loopholes that may keep him a free man. As Beachum becomes more and more determined to beat Crawford at his own intricately setup game, he risks losing both his shot at the lucrative job and his new love, Nikki Gardner (Rosamund Pike). Easily Hoblit's finest film since 1996's PRIMAL FEAR, FRACTURE benefits from a similar sense of suspense, which is heightened by the fascinating interplay between Hopkins and Gosling. While Hopkins verges on Hannibal Lecter territory, he never makes the leap to that villain's macabre persona, instead making Crawford a chillingly detached criminal who finds room for occasional moments of disarming humor. And as Beachum, Gosling embodies young, aspiring swagger, making his character the polar opposite of his lost, drug-addled Oscar-nominated role in HALF NELSON. Aided by a smart script (courtesy of Glenn Gers and Daniel Pyne), Hopkins and Gosling take what could have been a decent courtroom drama, and elevate it to the level of a mesmerizing chess match. Ethics, morals and the will to win are the core issues of Fracture, a gripping puzzle of a thriller that plays out as a mind game between two men

Doesn't hold up to a lick of scrutiny, which is a shame, since it provides such juicy material for a pair of contrasting actors...

Um thriller bem realizado que abusa do talento da dupla principal para tentar se diferenciar de tantos outros exemplares do gênero. E quase consegue.

Fracture is an entertaining movie that should be better than it is.

While you might feel conflicted between whether you're seeing Hannibal Lecter all over again or you're in awe because it's hauntingly brilliant, Anthony Hopkins and the film's makers molded pieces of the previous character into a uniquely tailored altered

A light psychological thriller that works better on a technical level than a thematic or character-centric one.

At no moment does this stop feeling like an especially glossy and especially joyless episode of Law and Order.

It's straightforward and nongimmicky (you don't have to wonder whodunit because we're told in the first few minutes), involves a minimum of blood and gore, and holds our interest nicely.

It's occasionally quite witty, it's able to tell us a great deal about its characters and their back stories in an economic fashion and its plot swings are surprising and compelling.

A strong cast and smart-talking characters help elevate this into very watchable territory, with just enough suspense and style to win through.

Not since Lecter has a role been this well suited to Hopkins, whose intelligence and pristine formality as an actor often make him seem alien.

The main draw, of course, is watching Hopkins and Gosling go head-to-head. And both are more than up to the challenge.
