A handsome, amiable man, he is more concerned with his young nephew (Dickie Moore) than the problems of the unemployed. Hammond is a party figurehead--the candidate of corrupt interests--and a bachelor with a very private secretary, Pendola Molloy (the elegant Karen Morley). This president tests the dedication of his idealistic public secretary, Hartley Beekman (Franchot Tone), and nearly everyone else around him. Things change, however, when President Hammond has an auto accident. Near death, he has an epiphany--and turns with a vengeance on those who elected him, becoming an advocate for the common people. In making GABRIEL OVER THE WHITE HOUSE, director Gregory La Cava and producer Walter Wanger developed a startling cinematic answer to the chaos that many thought was overrunning the country. The film feels like a prayer for deliverance; regarded as truly remarkable when it appeared, La Cava's movie is still astonishing today. [More]

A unique and somewhat daffy Depression-era comedy New Deal fantasy film.

A classic example of pre-code Hollywood getting away with all kinds of depression-era madness.

Of all the crackpot political films to come out of Hollywood ... this is surely the crackpottest, and must really be seen to be believed.

Gabriel Over the White House encourages its viewers to live the fantasy of the philosopher-king, but never counts the costs of such a regime.

Fascinating, original, definitely ahead of its time fantasy.

A most interesting fantasy, dated and quaint by today's standards, but most interesting for its time. The idea of a president warring on the underworld and executing criminals has some appeal.

Strange film that sees Huston as U.S. president who feels he's being visited by the angel Gabriel. More than topical considering the current prez' religious preoccupations.

An odd, earnest comedy with soapbox leanings.

Odd, slightly disconcerting Gregory La Cava film that's more interesting than good
