Consensus: Get Smart rides Steve Carell's considerable charm for a few laughs, but in the end is a rather ordinary Summer comedy.

When the headquarters of U.S. spy agency Control is attacked and the identities of its agents compromised, the Chief (Alan Arkin) has no choice but to promote his ever-eager analyst Maxwell Smart, who has always dreamt of working in the field alongside stalwart superstar Agent 23 (Dwayne Johnson). Smart is partnered instead with the lovely-but-lethal veteran Agent 99 (Anne Hathaway). Given little field experience and even less time, Smart-armed with nothing but a few spy-tech gadgets and his unbridled enthusiasm-must thwart the doomsday plans of KAOS head Siegfried (Terence Stamp). --© Warner Bros. Reviews for Get Smart
It's all great PG-13 fun, a family-friendly spy spoof that's as funny as it is action-packed.
Basically, what it does is take Michael Scott from The Office, give him the skills of an assassin, and set him loose in the Russian countryside with Anne Hathaway. More often than not, it's a lot of fun.
The movie disc's extras include some 45 minutes of alternative jokes that you have the option of seeing and hearing while you watch the movie.
This retro-espionage spoof is more giggles than satirical grit, and simply lacks the comic punch and charisma, along with the pungent Cold War flavor of the times that energized the original."This retro-espionage spoof is more giggles than satirical grit,
...funny, clever, nostalgic, up-to-date, and...well...smart. (Blu-ray Edition)
There's nothing wrong with mixing action and comedy, but it's difficult to go from Carell performing yoga-esque moves to avoid security beams to a scene where he's suddenly shooting a bunch of people.
