"Ghost" in a Live-Action "Shell"?
by Jeff Giles | January 22, 2007
Discuss Article
This falls under the 'news before the actual news' category, but according to ComingSoon.net, Variety is reporting that Kodansha, the company behind the popular "Ghost in the Shell" manga books and cartoons, has sold the property's live-action rights to animation studio Production I.G.

Details are scant, but fans can expect that the adaptation, true to the franchise, will focus on the futuristic exploits of crimefighter Motoko Kusanagi. Whether those old April Fool's rumors regarding James Cameron directing and Trent Reznor doing the soundtrack will prove to be true, however, is another story.

Who'll play the Major?

I thought Cameron will be working on Battle Angel Alita next? The GitS universe is just as good, perhaps maybe even more accessible for an adaptation. Heh, what's with Cameron and cyborgs.

Whoa, just keep it away from anything resembling Aeon Flux or Ultaviolet. Sigourny Weaver could have played the part 10 years ago.

The only good ghost in the shell was the first anime film. The second was ok at best. I don't care enough to watch the cartoons. So, it won't matter to me how close to the story it is or not.

This could be soooo good, but really horrible. I'm more happy about the rumors of a US-Nana movie.

Production IG. wouldn't make a live-action movie, would they? IF they want one, they would most likely sell the rights (to an American producer). Anyone agree?

No matter how terrible a GitS live-action flik is, it could never tarnish the original anime films or the manga for that matter.
