Frustrated by their quiet and routine existence, Joe (Burns) convinces his two friends, Al (Carney) and Willie (Strasberg), that they have nothing to lose, so they plan a daredevil robbery in the twilight of their lives. The eccentric trio is given a boost of exuberance and energy executing the hapless caper, but their real difficulties begin when they actually pull off the heist and are faced with a new way of living. Directly following the robbery, Willie dies from a heart attack, and Joe and Al are left to contemplate the meaning of their lives and their newfound fortune. So they decide to make the best of their situation and head to Vegas. The three Hollywood legends are positively magnificent in this debut film from screenwriter-director Martin Brest, who delivers deft direction and a deliriously charming and touching script. Charles Hallahan is outstanding as Joe's concerned nephew, Pete. [More]
