This extraordinarily simple and moving film relates the tale of an orphaned Hasidic scholar (Michael Goldstein) whose restlessness leads him away from his books and out into the countryside on a search for God and meaning. He's welcomed into the home of a poor, good-hearted farmer (Herscehl Bernardi) and finds contentment working as a tutor to the farmer's children, one of whom happens to be a beautiful, barefoot girl of marriageable age (Helen Beverly). Produced in conjunction with the Yiddish Art Theater, and adapted from the 1916 literary classic by Peretz Hirschbein, this was a celebrated success in New York, earning over $80,000. on one print in one theater over the course of a four-month run. It's one of the first films legendary "B" director Edgar G. Ulmer made after leaving the big studio system, and he imbues it with the timeless, lyrically rustic feel of an impressionistic painting. The soundtrack is in Yiddish, with English subtitles. [More]
