Is Wes Craven Ready for a "Scream 4"?
by Scott Weinberg | February 27, 2007
Discuss Article
While over at the New York Comic Con to help hype his "Hills Have Eyes 2," horror master Wes Craven answered a few questions about the possibility of a "Scream 4" -- and yes, a "Hills Have Eyes 3."

Regarding a second sequel to the remake of the original "Hills Have Eyes" (got all that?), Mr. Craven gave the standard answer: Wait and see if Part 2 makes any coin and then we might have some news for you.

But when someone broached the subject of a third "Scream" sequel, Wes had this to say: "I think that it's not completely off the table at this point, as far as the studio making it. I was asked if I'd be interested, but I said it would depend on the script. [Scream 4] isn't something that's around the corner or anything, they are now thinking about it."

So what say the "Scream" fans out there? Do we even want a "Scream 4" at this point? Hasn't the series pretty much run its course by now? Or are there new and juicier horror conventions worth skewering / copying?

They can try. Scream 3 wasn't all that bad, imo.

The Scream Trilogy is one of the most underrated horror series that I can think of. While it wasn't scary, and the acting was quasi-shit, I was impressed with the interconnectivity between the three.... and I know that when I was a little kid it scared me. Not so much any more. It has a chance to be good. Exciting.

Why?
There was no need for Scream 2 or 3, let alone 4. All these sequels do to original horror flicks is turn them into cliches. Freddy Kreuger became a joke once the sequels to Nightmare On Elm Street were made. He was a genuinely terrifying character in the original. Same with Scream... a terrific original concept ruined by trying to regurgitate it.

The first two Scream films were classics that made you laugh and scream nearly at the same time. Scream 3 suffered greatly from not have Kevin Williamson complete the script and handing the writing chores over to Ehren Kruger. The fun and "jump-out-of-your-seat" thrills fell apart as much as Wes Craven tried holding them together. The only way I'd want to see a Scream 4 would be if it were the original Wes Craven/Kevin Williamson duo back at the helm with whoever is left alive from the original cast. Since that is nigh impossible, we'll stick to the original trilogy. Let it rest in peace guys.

P.S. - Anyone remember that Scream was originally supposed to be title Scary Movie? (Useless trivia moment...done!)

okay the first scream movie was pretty good better than i expected it to be funny and scary at the same time a very fun movie.......scream 2 was a little bit worse but it was still good it didn't lose too much of the fun of the first film once again funny and scary just not as superb as the original.........scream 3 was different it lost both it's horror and it's comedy it was just a big dumb so called thriller it was a complete mess it should have never been made or if it was made it should have been made much much much better........plus it lost it's 18a rating this movie was able to be played on YTV sure it was played late at night but still, the first two could never be played on that channel....... anyway wes craven should know after watching and making scream 3 that this movie dosen't need another sequel......you screwed up on the last film so why not just leave the series and make that the last installment please and no hills have eyes 2 or 3 either we don't need that.......sure hills of eyes was no scream 3 but it was no evil dead either it was just an excuse for gore if you ask me

It's been way too long, and it's beyond unnecessary. No. No Scream 4. Please.

maybe Scream 4 can address the topic of old, dried-up frachises being renewed with an unneccessary sequel to capitalize on people's nostalgia and stupid 16 year olds who will see ANYTHING on a Friday night.

Both of the scream sequels sucked, the second was a lot better than the third. But if the want some sequel ideas for horror movies, they should remake something like fright night, the howling, or maybe even cujo.

Why doesn't Wes make CURSED 2? That would be wonderful for sure!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm really annoyed by Wes Craven. He's an overrated filmmaker who's only made a few decent films, and noone can convince me otherwise.

I dont think Wes is in the right place to make a Scream 4.... I mean the first two were pretty good, the third blew. I just think he's lost his edge and it would make for a terrible movie.

EXACTLY. The only way that Scream 4 should be made is if it deals with crap remakes of old (classic?) movies like The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and The Hills Have Eyes. Maybe it can be 10+ years in the future, and they decide to remake the original Scream. Sounds like it has potential.

Nice to see Craven is holding out for a script - if that's even true. probably holding out for the dumptruck full of cash to be backed up to his million-dollar house to he can bastardize another horror franchise.

you know what, they should do a prequel to the movie. we can see sidney's mom die. they can make it into a real horror movie with the gore and the suspense of the mom trying to get away from the killers. i'm kidding about this because it is a horrible idea.
