Fox Assures Hitman Will Be Rated "R"
by Alex Vo | October 12, 2007
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Once again, the Internet had us worried there for a minute. After yesterday's report that Fox would be retooling an "explicitly violent, very bloody cut" of Hitman for the Live Free or Die Hard crowd, Fox has jumped in for some much-appreciated damage control. Back to Article

"Hard R" press release statements timed to hit the press after unsubstantiated PG-13 rumors. A little calculated, methinks.

Studios understand the power of releasing a red band trailer online, and pushing a violent flick as a "Hard R." That terminology hasn't even really gained prominence until recently. As long as it makes money without necessitating a good script, director or cast.

So....are they going for the Soft R?

nah, they tried the "hard r" with pathfinder, saying "this film is rated R for" then like--massively bloody scenes or some ****, and that movie failed like a mother ****er

Hitman doesn't even need to be R. PG-13 can be violent enough if done right like Casino Royale and I'd rather see action like the bathroom scene than all-out violence that they seem to be going for.

I dont think it's going t'be a bad movie, maybe for the gamers( I think the game wasn't that good by the way), but compared to the game, this movie's gon do more justice. Then again there's always gonna be whinners crying like *itches regardless of the outcome.

Even though it's going to be rated R, I still think their heads should explode into confetti.

History tells that this, like all other "videogame adaptations", will be terrible. But, I liked this game and am willing to give the movie a chance. At least it isn't directed by Uwe Bole.

R rating or not, this will be bad. There are numerous movies about hitmen so this is nothing ground breaking or original.

I thought the previews looked cool. The dude is a badass and the chick is hot. Plus the director's other movie Frontière(s) was really good. So everyone that is saying it is definately going to suck, what are they basing this on?

i think they are basing it off of other movies made off video games, but I dunno. COuld be a good shoot em up action movie, like the one Shoot em up was supposed to be, but waaay too forced.

You know, in general everyone is entitled to their opinion... unless your opinion is "The dude is badass the and the chick is hot." Frankly I'm amazed you mustered the literate prowess to even type that, but you may want to get back to grunting and hitting things before you strain yourself.

But in response to your inquiry as to upon what I am basing my opinion that this movie is (almost) definately going to suck:

Essentially the point of "Hitman" the video game is to gives the player the chance to act out various hitman movie cliches, therefore as has already been pointed out on this thread by translating the game into a movie your offering audiances preciously nothing they haven't seen before.

Futhermore, as is the case in many video game, "Codename 47" is presented in the games as minimally as possible, not unlike Master Chief in Halo, and Gordon Freeman in Half
Life. In all of these games, the main character though not completely anonymous, is presented in such a way that the player himself is able for the most part to inject his own personality into the character, in effect become the character. The three games mentioned represent three of probably the best examples of games which this invitation the player to assume the role of character is so fundemental to the spirit of the game. Consequentially, this makes these games unfilmable. By presenting a completely defined "Codename 47" character that may be in contrast to the fan (read: Target Audiance)'s own perception of the character simply won't work. This is the same reason fans of novels are never happy with movies based on them. Book require you to use your imagination to envision characters and events, then the movie asks you to accept what someone else envisioned when they read the book, the diffrance of course is that books provide a lot more creativity and inspiration for good movie-making than does the "Hitman" video game series.

And for the record, there are badder assed dudes and hotter chicks in better movies than this one. In fact, one of the reasons that's such a ridiculously stupid arguement, is that much like there always being a bigger fish, there is ALWAYS going to be a movie with badder assed dude and hotter chick, make the baddness of dude's asses and hotness of chicks a measurement of preciosly nothing. In fact based on that arguement "Escape for LA" and "Ballistic: Ecks VS Sever" (or however the hell they spelled it) should have been masterpieces.

It's still going to be a bad movie. Timothy Olyphant as Agent 47?? C'mon! Agent 47 is like in his late 30's or mid 40's. Olyphant looks like he's 21 with a bald head.

Well said, SpikeInMySkull! You beat me to explaining to people what this movie is a about. I am excited about this movie because the Hitman series is one of my favorite game series ever. This director's take on the game looks to be an interesting one. He seems to have hit on the major points of the game. Though to me, it looks like that this movie is going to hit on all possible aspects of the game. How you can go completely stealthy and beat a level, or how you can just run in guns blazing and still win. Which I think is perfectly acceptable because in the game sometimes you HAVE to.
I hope they can turn this into a movie that not only the fans of the game will like, but everyone will. I have a feeling that it's not going to be that way.
I wasn't too sure about Timothy Olyphant for this role either. I'm hoping he'll surprise me. So far, he looks pretty good in the trailers. Though, we all know how those can be deceiving. :/

OMG!! First off, if you've ever played a Hitman game, you'd know that it's known for unique style of gameplay and lots of blood and extreme violence. If they made the film without these two factors (blood violence), it would not be true to what the creators of this game have made a point to include and intensify with every new Hitman game. They would not make a point to go out of their way to include blood in the series if people didn't like it. The whole ordeal of Agent 47 hooking up with some chick is almost enough to scare me away from the film; since sex isnt in his character, it's getting the job done (killing people), among other things. Also I noticed some sayings about Live Free Or Die Hard, forget that movie! All the other Die Hard films have been bloody, violent and had common use of the "F" word. This one most obviously could not, hence the PG-13 rating, leading me away from the film for breaking tradition. Now I'm sure its a great, action-packed flick, but its not for me. Now back to Hitman, for a movie thats based on a game, it just has to follow some key elements from the game, not the story, but the key elements in the making that game unique. Resident Evil followed the basis of the games regarding Umbrella, and brought in some of the games characters with matching personalities, which is the base for a good game to film. All in all though, if Hitman had been given a PG-13, I would have forgotten its existence altogether. For a series to keep major similarities throughout every title and then erase it for its shot in hollywood would be shameful to them. I just hope that they can make it good and make it right.

ballistic was the worst, most non action packed, boring, plotless film ever created. awful garbage. it was rated r. why? um....um....who the hell knows. it sucked. although, escape from la and new york were fantastic films. and buddy, remember, almost everything has been done before, only now, its in different ways. there have been countless slasher films with sometimes unique or different murders, but all in all, its teens having sex, drinking, smoking pot and getting killed. action flicks are the same, its either revenge, just cause, running away, for the hell of it, etc. there have been way less hitman films than action films, so Hitman should be considered more new and one of few. The Professional was a good film, but it was more action than the stealth of a real hitman or in this case Agent 47. The game is built for unique stealth kills, and the opportunity to gun up everyone in site, but thats not what its really about. The film itself seems to lean in more of an action direction, but thats hollywood. It should still contain the essence of the games. Be more open minded to it, the image of gotten from it is that it will disappoint, though since I'm a fan of the games and a fairly open minded individual, I'm going to see it. I'm not saying to see it, just dont so brutally make statements, judgements and use weak backups against it before even seeing it.
