Academy Award®-winning director Hayao Miyazaki ("Spirited Away") takes moviegoers on an amazing new animated adventure that celebrates the power of love to transform and the resiliency of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Brimming with a blend of imagination, humor, action, and romance, "Howl's Moving Castle" recently played to great acclaim at the 2004 Venice Film Festival, and has become one of the biggest blockbusters of all time in Japan – earning more than $193 million at the box office and still counting. A distinguished cast of actors, under the direction of Pixar's Pete Docter ("Monsters, Inc."), lend their vocal talents to this English-language version of the film. Sophie (voiced by Emily Mortimer), an average teenage girl working in a hat shop, finds her life thrown into turmoil when she is literally swept off her feet by a handsome-but-mysterious wizard named Howl (voiced by Christian Bale), and is subsequently turned into a 90-year old woman (voiced by screen legend and two-time Oscar® nominee Jean Simmons) by the vain and conniving Wicked Witch of the Waste (voiced by screen legend and Oscar® nominee Lauren Bacall). Embarking on an incredible odyssey to lift the curse, she finds refuge in Howl's magical moving castle where she becomes acquainted with Markl, Howl's apprentice, and a hot-headed fire demon named Calcifer (voiced by Billy Crystal). Sophie's love and support comes to have a major impact on Howl, who flies in the face of orders from the palace to become a pawn of war and instead risks his life to help bring peace to the kingdom. Extraordinary characters, inventive imagery, and stunning artistry make this latest masterpiece from the visionary Miyazaki an unforgettable filmgoing experience. -- © walt Disney Pictures [More]

Reviews for Howl's Moving Castle
A Miyazaki film couldn’t breathe in a world already populated and established. It exists on its own as a fantasy whose only constraint is that it has to eventually end.
Charming, peculiar, and occasionally ingenious, Howl's Moving Castle tilts between fantastical beauty and philosophical pondering.
It's like a combination of Beauty And The Beast and The Wizard Of Oz with an extra dose of comedy - not a bad mix for an entertaining fairy tale.
This is a film meant for more mature youngsters, teens and adults and is best viewed on the big screen.
Docter's English vocal cast make "Howl" possibly Miyazaki's funniest outing without diluting any of Miyazaki's artistry.
Miyazaki doesn't push children down a familiar path. He takes off the training wheels and dares to ask young viewers to imagine alongside him.
Too abstruse for general American audiences. But if sheer animated beauty is up your alley, Miyazaki’s latest is an inviting daydream, easily worth your time.
Even a lesser Miyazaki effort is superior to 99 percent of its American contemporaries.
Exhibits an Alice in Wonderland puckishness in its characters and their absurd situations, and an underlying spiritual calm [unlike] the usual animated franticness.
Miyazaki's engaging touch for the surreal counterpoints the film's antiwar message nicely.
Decades from now Howl’s Moving Castle will be looked back at as a classic.
Another charming and inventive fairy tale every bit as good as [Miyazaki's] past offerings.
Howl's Moving Castle is a wildly imaginative and artistic adventure, but one that isn't easily understood.
This movie often soars, blending a childlike sense of wonder with sophisticated emotions and motives.
Movie magic is only as powerful as the imagination that casts it. Japanese master Hayao Miyazaki's imagination is the most creative in animated filmmaking.
A regression for Miyazaki from his last two films in almost every sense.
even a lesser Miyazaki effort is superior to 99 percent of its American contemporaries
...only the most die-hard fans of director Hayao Miyazaki will find something here worth embracing.
