Louis Leterrier on "The Incredible Hulk:" It's Not A Sequel?
by Jen Yamato | October 12, 2006
Discuss Article
SuperHeroHype.com has been tipped off to the latest "Hulk 2" rumor, which has director Louis Leterrier saying that 2008's "The Incredible Hulk" will not be a sequel.

As always, it's prudent to take this latest "Hulk 2" rumor with a healthy dose of skepticism -- or, with un grain de sel, since the Leterrier talk comes from one of the site's readers, who heard the director's scoop on French television.

Who will be the raging green giant in Leterrier's "Hulk 2?"

From SuperHeroHype.com, courtesy of their source, 'Fred':

"Louis Leterrier talked about Hulk 2 last night on French TV Show "la grande émission". He mentioned a 120 $ budget and said it won't be a sequel (that's the scoop I guess). He's looking for a bookish glass-wearing type for Banner, no mention of Eric Bana."

Few details have been released regarding the film so far, as Leterrier has stayed quiet on who would play the new Bruce Banner (perhaps "Prison Break"'s Dominic Purcell?), what the storyline would be, what kind of special effects he will use, if "Transporter" pal Jason Statham would be cast, where he will film, what kind of action he'll use, and if his "Hulk" will be a sequel to Ang Lee's 2003 version or not. At least, perhaps, we might have the answer to that last question. That is, if you believe what one website reader claims they heard the director say on French television.

The Universal Pictures project is in pre-production for a tentative 2008 release.

It better be a sequel.

I don't think it should be a sequel. Why make a sequel to a movie that wasn't well received? It's better to just start over with something good.

It's a nice approach but it seems too soon to use it. Not enough people have dismissed Hulk from their memories to recognize a restart of the series.

Nor do they need to. The film was very good.

Oh c'mon! What's there to it?! A BIG GREEN MONSTER runs around SMASHING shit. I always thought even the stupidest person on Earth could make a decent version of this, but somehow I've been proven wrong, and it looks like it'll happen again.

I don't disagree with you dinaflos, but it was really a matter of a taste. It just seemed like too many viewers didn't like Ang Lee's approach compared to what could have been.

I like the Ang Lee version, but I can see why alot of folks don't like it. I mostly get a kick out of how he cut it using techniques that emulate comic book panels. The mutant dogs were pretty goofy, though.

Agreed. I might go to see a new version if they waited a few more years, but 2008 is way too soon.

Whether or not the Ang Lee version was good or not depends entirely on person preference. However, there was a critical backlash against the movie, and it wouldn't be smart for a studio to ignore that. Restarting is a better move, both creatively and financially. I agree that they should wait a few more years, though. Maybe 2010.

So, I'm guessing that (box-office take aside) there wasn't nearly enough dumb action in the original film to warrant a genuine sequel with a returning cast and director? Too much pathos for the public? If all you want is a simple action fest with the Hulk smashing things, that's likely what you'll get. But, come on, that's not even all there is to the comics! There's more to this character than...smashing. And, for better or worse, Lee tried to show something deeper to him. There was something to grab on to there. But all anybody wants is formula, I suppose...

Hulk's critical and box-office performance made me give up on superhero movies. Finally someone had the guts to do more with the subject than showing spandex-clad boys and girls and it gets hammered, even if it was a very daring movie with a lot of depth. The only beacon of hope in the genre was Batman Begins, but between the Supermans, Spidermans en Fantastic Fours even that can't save the genre from being totally braindead.

It doesn't have to be a sequel, but if it's a complete restart like Begins was, I'll be upset. It's way too soon for that. The new one doesn't even have to mention the previous one. Just don't completely retcon it.

I think Ang Lee set up his Hulk perfectly for an action sequel. Got through all the origin story and probably decided to leave the sequel for the HULK MAD! HULK SMASH! Eric Bana was great.

But anyone with a modicum of intelligence wouldn't want to watch an all out smash fest. I find the mere thought of 120 minutes of pure action and adventure kind of insulting to the comic book character, which is indeed a rather fleshed out character with plenty of layers. Okay, so the classic savage Hulk was written for years as a rage driven smasher with little to no depth to it, but there have been great writers who saw the potential and did something with it.

I just think that making a movie that goes back to Hulk's roots is not the right step. I mean, I like a decent action sequence just as much as the next guy, but there's so much of Banner/Hulk's psyche to explore!

I'm glad it's not a sequel. Doesn't having part one be a mature and tragic treatment of the character and having part two be a standard action hero movie kind of seem inconsistent to anybody else?

Most people didn't like Ang Lee's version because it portrayed the whole thing like a Frankenstein's monster type film, which entailed feelings and other such useless nonsense, like a serious plot (sarcasm)

I think most of the comic fans hated it because they didn't really want a beginning, middle, and end story. They just wanted two hours of the big green one running around smashing things and causing ultimate destruction. It's really what he's known for.

I personally like Ang Lee's version, even if it did start off slow.

i don't think Hulk was as bad as most people say. i mean, what was everyone expecting? Lou Ferrigno painted green again? it's pretty much a Jekyl and Hyde story in comic book form, just include more action next time. i didn't mind exploring Hulk's psyche too much, just don't slow the movie down too much with it. and come up with a worthy opponent for him next time, the mutant dogs were silly.

Considering Ang Lee's filmography compared to Louis Leterrier, I put a lot more trust in Lee's version than his. The only people who seem to hate Lee's version are the ones who prefer their action mindless without any attempt at all at real characters

I did not hate Lee's version but I can't say I really liked it. There was alot of cool ideas but in the end it was just very ill concieved. I applaud his efforts to break the mold but it was a failed attempt.

Thank God theres a new director
Only way im going to see this movie is if it isnt a sequel. The first one sucked, the multi-camera point of view gave me a headache. Romance should not be involved with the Hulk.
