Over the course of nine films, Jeanette MacDonald and Nelson Eddy brought an electric charisma to their onscreen singing personas comparable to the excitement Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire generated with their dancing or the thrill William Powell and Myrna Loy carried into their dialogue rhythms. MacDonald and Eddy's last film together is an adaptation of a Rodgers and Hart musical and includes the songs "I Married an Angel," "Spring Is Here," "At the Roxy Music Hall," "Now You've Met an Angel," "Willie's Former Girl Friends," "A Twinkle in Your Eye," and "End of a Dream," among others. Eddy plays Count Willie Palaffi, a playboy who carelessly runs a Budapest bank, while MacDonald plays Anna Zador, a young secretary at the bank. Willie and Anna dance together at one of his opulent parties, with Anna wearing an angel costume. When Willie dozes off shortly thereafter, he dreams that he has in fact married an angel, causing her to abandon heaven and lose her wings. The unusual plot is carried off well under the hands of director W.S. Van Dyke, who was completing his fifth film with the singing duo. [More]
