Despite Garbo--and the title--this is one of her least inspired film, a pale imitatioin of Romance based on an 1884 play! There's not much chemistry with Robert Montgomery, but you'll hear Garbo say, "I want to be alone."

Greta Garbo stars as Yvonne, an alluring artist's model in La Vie Boheme Paris who begins an ill-fated love affair with Andre Martel (Robert Montgomery), a wholesome young student, in this bittersweet romance directed by consummate professional Clarence Brown. Yvonne is the celebrated muse and toast of Parisian artistic circles, a souce of constant inspiration and heartbreak. She is living a bohemian life of sordid parties, reckless love affairs, and constant flux until she meets a young man like no one she has ever been with. The virtuous Andre Martel falls for the alluring and mysterious woman and loves her deeply. Completely smitten, Yvonne gives up her jaded artistic lifestyle in order to settle down with the simple, respectable young man. But Andre knows nothing of Yvonne's sordid past, and he is shocked when he does discover the secrets of his seductive lover, which might send him back into the waiting arms of his former nice-girl fiancée, unable to forget Yvonne's past indiscretions. This tale of doomed love features the legendary Greta Garbo at her smoldering best, a captivating and romantic figure on the brink of despair, cavorting with high society in glittering gowns by Adrian.
