Premiere Picks the 25 Most Shocking Movie Moments
by Scott Weinberg | October 25, 2005
Discuss Article
Here's another one of those "best of" lists that we movie geeks love to read, dismiss, and then discuss with friends for a few hours. This time it's Premiere Magazine's 25 Most Shocking Movie Moments, which you can read and enjoy right here. But before you do ... think about the topic. Can you pick at least half of Premiere's choices?

Obviously "Jaws," "Alien," and "The Empire Strikes Back" earn their places on the list, but the Premiere writers have come up with a few clever and surprising picks as well.

Click here to see the magazine's favorite shock moments, and then stop back here to let everyone know how insane the Premiere writers are for leaving Movie X off the list.

Missing shock moment
I cannot believe the "put your mouth on the pavement" execution from American History X is not on this list. One of the most shocking moments, surely.

Another missing shock moment
The revelation from the climax of Oldboy was missing from this list too. It has been one of the few surprises I never saw coming.

"The Fury" (1978)
I would also put Brian De Palma's followup to "Carrie," 1978's "The Fury" on the list for its climactic scene where Amy Irving makes John Cassavetes' villain literally explode.

If the surprise climax to Fight Club wasn't worthy enough to make the list, nothing was.

American History X and Old boy definetly. Fight Club, Memento and the Village too. (although I don't expect anyone to agree with me on that last one.)

I have to add the "what's in the box" ending to Seven. It wasn't mind blowing in any way but it was definately powerful and unexpected.

whatever I'm sure everyone has something they would put on this list if they could; personally I would have added the scene from WoW when you could see body being torn apart in the rear-view mirror and the opening sequence of casino.

and the ending of double idemnity; talk about unerving the stanwyck character in that film may be the most evil movie villan ever; I understand that's up for debate but I would consider her more evil than like say a Jason because she was so manipulative and aware of what she was doing

It's a good thing the ear scene made it. And if you don't know what "The Ear Scene" is then don't call yourself a movie buff. Or normal.

Movies that were left out
Some titles that should have been on the list are "A Clockwork Orange", "Irrevesible", Blue Velvet", "Man Bites Dog", "Kissed" and "Requiem For A Dream". Those movies had shocking moments plastered all over

I agree 100%. I saw this at home and is the only movie Ive ever watched that has ever made me stand up and basicly freak out. I have seen a lot of goor in movies and blood but this takes the cake. The sound his teeth make when he puts his mouth on the curb gives me the chills even now while I write this.

A History of Violence should also be on there, the scene where he bashes the mobster's nose into his brain (ending in its removal), or where his son blows Ed Harris' innards all over his dad, those each startled me immensely. Or the "Singin' in the Rain" rape sequence from Clockwork Orange, or the suicide and shooting of the drill seargent by Pvt. Pile in Full Metal Jacket. Or how about the opening sequence of Kill Bill when Uma Thurman is shot in the head, and let us not forget the rape sequence in the Pawn shop owner's basement...
