A delightful, visually inventive fantasy, Federico Fellini's JULIET OF THE SPIRITS is about a bored Italian housewife (Giulietta Masina, Fellini's real-life wife) who finds relief from the mundane--and her philandering husband (Mario Pisu)--through sensual escapades in the spirit realm. This fantastic world just happens to be in Juliet's subconscious and is populated with people both from her past and her imagination. As Juliet spends more time in touch with her desires, she slowly gains more independence. Fellini's first color film is, unsurprisingly, a stunning spectacle that makes the most of its incredible premise. Awash in both bold colors and eroticism, JULIET OF THE SPIRITS favors the visual over the narrative and dreams over reality. [More]

Visually splendid piece of eye candy that hides behind its gaudy exteriors an emptiness and lack of vision.

Gaudy, more integrated than later Fellini, but this take on feminine psyche lacks vision.

It is arguably Fellini's most personal masterpiece, but those who may have stumbled upon it and don't know much about Fellini's films most certainly couldn't choose a better one to start with.

despite Fellini's indulgences, much of the film works largely due to Giulietta Masina's fine performance

A dazzling technical achievement, from the color to the tracking shots that delight in running down every detail of Juliet's companions.

The movie that swirls around Masina is a dazzling -- and, for some, incoherent -- production deep into the feminine psyche.

The film is just wonderfully ... well, Fellini-esque.

A mad, resplendent peacock of a film, a cinematographic riot of color and sensuality that evokes its era -- the swinging mid-'60s -- as much as any movie made during those giddy years.
