Justice League of America Pushed Back?
Warner Bros. execs rumored to be unhappy with the cast.
by Jeff Giles | January 08, 2008
Discuss Article
Remember how Warner Bros. was supposed to make a big announcement a couple of weeks ago, introducing the cast of George Miller's Justice League of America? What happened with that, anyway?

According to a report published yesterday at IESB, all is not well behind the scenes of JLA -- in fact, the site's sources say that production has been delayed. From the article:

"Justice League is indeed in danger of not starting production on time, and maybe even getting scrapped altogether. The concerns are that the script is not ready to go in front of cameras, and also that the budget is getting a bit out of control. The WGA strike has proven to be Kryptonite to Superman and friends."

IESB says the Justice League cast is "locked," but one of the report's sources claims that "the execs know it's mediocre." The scoop from another tipster is similarly grim:

"Justice League has been pushed back to at least April or May, and possibly a start date as late as June or July...that is, of course, if the movie doesn't get scrapped altogether."

It bears mentioning that the JLA gossip has always run hot and cold -- one week, we're hearing rumors about the picture being fast-tracked; the next, it's just the opposite -- but IESB's Justice League sources have proven fairly reliable thus far. Maybe we won't be hearing that big casting announcement for awhile.

Perhaps, gamejediben. But to invoke the immortal wisdom of Bill Cosby, God has a sense of humor.

Please scrap this over-eager, ill-timed, poorly conceived, mediocorly cast film now Warner Bros, and you will receive the fans blessing. Put your energies into building your other properties, Flash, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, first before you jump the gun with a team pic.

Could it be? Is it possible that someone at Warner Bros. has actually been paying attention to all the gripes and grumblings from concerned fans on this and other sites over the past few months? Whether so or no, Justice League possibly being shelved is proof that not everyone at that company has their head totally up their @$$!

Oh, happy day!!!!!!

I agree with Gamejedi on this one , praise Jebus !!!

This had potential to be the largest big budget movie flop of all time and someone FINALLY realized that they had no story , had no cast and had no support for this project.

Lets hope this leads to them going back to the drawing board and coming up with a JLA movie that actually makes sense and doesnt seem like an episode of some teen drama . Lets get someone who knows the material in there and start from scratch and do this right .

You guys are getting too excited. Let's not forget WB's still threatening us with a Teen Titans movie.

If this was to go through, it wouldn't have been a success at all. From the decision of using a whole new roster of actors to play the heroes to a lack of a plotline, this movie was headed to the dumps from Day 1.

Well if that's true, at least they can just use the cast from this movie and put it in that one.

There, fixed.

i'm gonna laugh if they push it back so far that the current cast drops out...and they cast an even worse ensemble...haha. i still think it'd be better just to do this cgi or something. ONLY if everything worked out(cast, story, director) would this work. this has very little chance of being made if the execs are saying this month...no this month...ok maaaybe this month. how 'bout half past never?

I agree wit gimy. A CGI movie like beowulf would be great with some damn good voice actors....or real actors if they must would fit this perfectly and save the studio a ****-ton of money.

Beowulf cost $150 to make. i can't see their current live action budget being that much bigger than this. it might be the only way the movie could work, but i don't know that it would result in such a huge savings in terms of production cost. i say send this turd back from wence it came: the $h*t heap.

Why not just make an animated film similar to that of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm? I mean really, could it be any worse?

I too thought this sounded like a bad idea, as far as just rushing into it and going in a direction that no one seemed happy with, but you just have to love the studio's poorly veiled lack of confidence. "Oh yeah, we're fired up for this thing! We're gonna get started on it this summer, or maybe just NEVER!"

It would be nice if they would just tell us "Hey, this whole strike thing is really causing a problem for us, so we'll get back to this project at a later time". The decision to scrap a JLA movie altogether because of the strike seems a bit hasty. WB needs to just re-group and not be in such a hurry about it. It doesn't seem like anyone involved with it right now is SO important that they can't be replaced if need be. Take the time and get an actual name or 2, not a bunch of interchangeable nobodies, y'know?

Please scrap this disastor before it's too late. If you really want to do a JLA or Teen Titans movie, then animate them. Don't emabarass the franchises by casting people like Hanna Montana as Wonder Woman and making a live action garbage movie that will make a killing on opening weekend.

AConline, "Batman: Mask of the Phantasm" didn't make money at a time when it was actually something different, and that's why they wouldn't make a theatrical JLA movie like that. Plus, a movie like that wouldn't really look that much different than all the DC animated series on Cartoon Network or any of their direct-to-DVD releases that are around today anyway, so there would really be nothing all that unique about it. That's not to say that the quality would be poor, certainly not, but it just wouldn't make money, and that's all it's about really.

I also don't agree with the claims that a CG movie would be the way to go. After seeing several of the characters in big budget live-action adventures of their own and seeing that adult audiences aren't really willing to take animation seriously yet in non-family films (meaning, Beowulf couldn't even come close to Pixar money), I don't see how it can be looked at by general audiences as anything but a big step down in terms of presentation, especially if it is toned down for the sake of appealing only to kids, and not also to the more mature audiences that enjoyed "Batman Begins" and...well, SOME people enjoyed "Superman Returns", I guess.

Spiderman cost alot more than that and that was just for one superhero and 3 villians on screen. Justice league would have at least 6 Superheroes and who knows how many villians all doing there thing. But heap is where this current version belongs.
