It can be the poster child film for how a crass Hollywood has the ability to ruin even the best of novels.

Told in flashback, the film tells a story set in pre-World War II Alexandria, Egypt, that centers around Justine (Anouk Aimée), a Jewess, and her husband, a Christian millionaire, one of the nation's wealthiest bankers. The beautiful, free-spirited woman dates a variety of men (with her husband's consent) and is also deeply involved in a plot to arm Palestinian Jews. The web of politics, friendship, and love affairs, however, becomes tangled, and Justine and her husband are arrested. The film, also starring Dirk Bogarde and Michael York, was shot on location in Tunis, initially placed under Joseph Strick's direction. George Cukor was brought in to complete the film after Strick left the project. [More]
