Adapted from Mr. Evans's tell-all autobiography, the movie takes the audience on an intimate journey into the mind of this Hollywood legend. Robert Evans lived the life that many only dream of. His film career started in 1956, at the oddest of places: poolside at the Beverly Hills Hotel. His good looks, charm, and overwhelming confidence captured the eye of screen legend Norma Shearer. She offered him a role in the picture "Man of a Thousand Faces." After a glamorous, but short-lived, career as a movie star, Evans decided to try his hand at producing. Miraculously, at the age of 34, with no producing credits to his name, he landed a job as chief of production at Paramount Pictures. Evans ran the studio from 1966-1974. During his tenure, Evans was responsible for bringing some of the greatest films of the era to the screen, including "The Godfather," "Rosemary's Baby," "Love Story," "The Odd Couple," "The Conformist," "Harold and Maude," and "Chinatown." By the early '80s, the "Golden Boy" of Hollywood was losing his luster. After a failed marriage to Ali MacGraw, a cocaine bust, and, finally, a rumored involvement in the "Cotton Club" murder, Evans disappeared into near-obscurity. Only through tremendous will and uncanny luck did he once again rise as "the kid who stays in the picture." -- © 2002 USA Films [More]

Witty, charming, ultimately empathetic portrait of a once-upon-a-time industry titan.

[Morgen and Burstein] reinvigorate the usual menu of archival footage with a 3-D cutout style that imbues inert black and white stills with a playful, camp dynamism.

It's Bob's story, and he's so good and so experienced at telling it, you wouldn't want to ride through hell with anyone but him as your tour guide.

So what if it's lopsided, it's a great story and told well with Evans' confidence, swagger and spin moving at full speed.

The Kid Stays in the Picture may be baloney. But it's all beef, and no bull.

It's never too late for a resurrection in Hollywood, and for Robert Evans, The Kid Stays in the Picture may be it.

A snazzy kick -- it's never less than hugely entertaining -- that should in no way be mistaken for an unbiased account.

The film's a giddy joyride through the scrapbook, but never do you feel as though you're staring at fading memories.

[Evans is] a fascinating character, and deserves a better vehicle than this facetious smirk of a movie.

Evans is such a capable storyteller that you find yourself liking him even though he's not exactly likeable.

An admitted egomaniac, Evans is no Hollywood villain, and yet this grating showcase almost makes you wish he'd gone the way of Don Simpson.

An almost perfect embodiment of the spirit of its subject: it's slick, self-serving and amusing but ultimately rather shallow, more apologia than analysis.

A documentary history of chutzpah presented in the language of oily success by a beast who knows the value of a good story told well.

It's the kind of documentary that doesn't get nominated for awards because it's too entertaining.
