Reviews for Kids
Clark has stepped back into objectivity so far that he has neglected his role as interpreter for us.
With his debut feature, Larry Clark has made an unpleasant film about a few repulsive characters who lead a fairly irredeemable existence.
A movie that pretends to be concerned with making an important social statement about modern youth, but which instead is just relentlessly in-your-face, wallowing in degradation to make a quick, controversial buck at the local multiplex.
Ostensibly about the banality of youthful evil, Kids is simply about its own banality.
One of Larry Clark's infamous "Kids are Evil Monsters" movies, Clark tells very little, and shows too much with an art illusion.
Trashy and exploitational. Clark comes off like a skuzzy pornographer taking advantage of his cast while using a faux vérité excuse as his accomplice.
There's an unsettling subtext here; despite the presence of a broad (not to mention tired, simplistic, and overworked) "message," it feels like exploitation.
