Out in theaters this week: marvelous fights (The Incredible Hulk, starring Edward Norton and Liv Tyler) and suicide-a-go-gos (The Happening, starring Mark Wahlberg and Zooey Deschanel). What say ye, critics?
Trading the emotional theatrics of Ang Lee's Hulk for Louis Leterrier's vision of a streamlined chase movie was the right move for Marvel. Taking over the role from Eric Bana, Edward Norton stars are Dr. Bruce Banner, who's forced to go on the run when warmongers desire to exploit his transformative powers. The pacing of The Incredible Hulk never flags, critics say, and there's no shortage of action scenes. But dissenters wonder if the smarts of Lee's Hulk and the visceral matter of Leterrier's had to be mutually exclusive. At 70 percent on the Tomatometer, for an Incredible time, look up Hulk.
What's Happening?
M. Night
Shyamalan hitting new Tomatometer lows, that's what. The director once
bestowed as the next Spielberg stumbles in rehabilitating his post-Lady in the
Water reputation:
The Happening,
starring Mark
Wahlberg and
Zooey
Deschanel on the run from an airborne toxin that causes people to
spontaneously off themselves, is getting the worst reviews of Shyamalan's
career. Critics claim the interesting premise gives way to stilted performances
and line readings, bombastic moralizing, and scant plot development past the
first act. At 13 percent on the Tomatometer, The Happening is a
non-event.
"Sorry, Zooey. Not a vintage shop for miles."
Also opening in limited release:
- Encounters at the End of the World, a documentary from cinema's craziest living legend, Werner Herzog, is at 92 percent.
- Baghead, a comedy/thriller from those darned mumblecore kids, is at 100 percent.
- My Winnipeg, from cinema's other kook cult director, Guy Maddin, is at 93 percent.
- Beauty in Trouble, a Czech love triangle dramedy, is at 43 percent.
- Chris & Don: A Love Story, a documentary about author Christopher Isherwood and painter Don Bachardy, is at 89 percent.
- Love Comes Lately, a drama formulated from Isaac Bashevis Singer stories, is at 67 percent.
- Quid Pro Quo, a multifaceted New York story, is at 69 percent.

fullmetal_medji writes: on Jun 05 2008 05:04 PM I'm surprised how high of a score Kung Fu Panda got. I might have to go see that. Zohan looks like the funniest film Sandler has done in a while, and plus Judd Apatow co-wrote it so it can't be all that bad right? (Reply to this) |

Some guy you dont know writes: on Jun 05 2008 05:05 PM The Go-Getter, Mongol and Mother of Tears are all amazing films. Kungu Fu Panda kicks also ***. What a great week. (Reply to this) |

tomwaitsjr writes: on Jun 05 2008 05:21 PM Too bad Go-Getter isn't getting better reviews, I love Jena Malone. I saw the trailer for The Promotion. It was beyond awful. I'd hate to see how bad the non-trailer parts of the film must be. Awful. I wish Mongol was showing in my area. . . Kung-Fu Panda looks good. I gather the Dustin Hoffman character is hilarious. bribios writes: on Jun 05 2008 06:01 PM Awesome caption on Zohan. And is that the chick from Donnie Darko at one the bottom pic? She's hot in a "girl you would actually see on the street" kind of way. (Reply to this) |

AudioNinja writes: on Jun 05 2008 06:27 PM I'm ashamed to say that I have once or twice laughed at commercials for Zohan. That said, I'm still passing on everything coming out this week and will probably just go see Iron Man again in prep for Hulk next week. ==TJ== (Reply to this) |

neoes writes: on Jun 05 2008 06:34 PM Wow...so apparently, Kung Fu Panda is actually pretty awesome. But I think we all saw this coming...I mean, come on...he's a panda...who does Kung Fu. How can little kids not want to see that? I once or twice laughed at Zohan, probably not going to see it, but dumb friends might make me :) (Reply to this) |

ARIES2411 writes: on Jun 05 2008 08:26 PM not suprised with zohan's percentage. funny enough, it will still probably be considered one of his funniest movies ever by fans. Panda looks entertaining enough but Mongol is my main priority right now... that is until The Dark Knight (Reply to this) |

the train writes: on Jun 06 2008 12:15 AM In reply to this comment (#1775573) because of the subject matter, i figured that zohan's % wouldn't be very good. the commercials look funny and apatow is involved, so i will definitely see it. @ derekrulz66: i'll make the dangerous assumption that your question is sincere--most of the people on the indie blogs believe that latter day weezer albums (anywhere from the green album to make believe, depending) are sloppy, soulless messes. they're panning the red album, whereas places like allmusic.com are giving it 4.5 out of 5, so it makes sense to call it a "hipster pact." at least, i thought it was pretty funny. whiskeyriver writes: on Jun 06 2008 06:19 AM In reply to this comment (#1775573) Well, because Ms. Malone's character is apparently a hipster (I call them scenesters) in this film, and because Weezer is now tre' lame (and has been for quite some time). Thus, no self-respecting hipster should EVER find themselves purchasing another Weezer album. I know I wouldn't! (Reply to this) |

sunsaz writes: on Jun 06 2008 10:32 AM Gotta see Mongol eventually. Though I'm pleasently surprised to see that Panda's actually getting good reviews. I guess between Black and Sandler releasing films on the same day, the critics are picking the lesser of two evils. (Reply to this) |

PFK is the french-langage translation of KFC (Kentucky Fried Chicken). So, is KFP like KFC? So good but sooooooooooo bad for your healt? I will know it when I watch it. (Probably not in theater. I'm saving my "summer animated movie" money for WALL-E Soory DreamWorks!) (Reply to this) |
