Her husband Lydon Baines Johnson was sworn in shortly after the assassination of President Kennedy. President Johnson would immediately follow through on important legislation such as the Civil Rights Act, medicare, and the war on poverty. Johnson would soon be enmeshed in the unpopular Vietnam war and at the forefront of great unrest across the country.
