Intrepid British archaeologist Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) has made perhaps the most important archaeological discovery in history: an orb that leads to the mythical Pandora's Box. Unfortunately, the orb falls into the hands of Jonathan Reiss (Ciaran Hinds), an evil scientist who deals in killer viruses and hopes to sell the secrets of the box as the ultimate weapon. Recruited by British Intelligence to get the orb back from Reiss, Lara enlists Terry Sheridan (Gerard Butler), a British marine turned mercenary--and her former love interest--to help. The two embark on an adventure that spans continents in an attempt to regain the orb. Lara is a walking advertisement for "girl power." She's brilliant, athletic, courageous, and saucy. She flips jet skis, parachutes to safety from tall buildings, dives, rides horses--nothing seems beyond her. Best of all, Lara is one of the good ones--she'll do whatever she must to keep the world safe. Directed by Jan de Bont, this film was shot on location in Greece, Kenya, Hong Kong, England, and Wales. Seems like a colossally bad movie, but in reality it's just not colossal enough.

Lara Croft lopes from one action set-piece to the next without developing any real rhythm or drive.

More sex, more exotic locations, but still no decent story.

As impressive as Angelina Jolie's many physical feats may be, it takes even more stamina and fortitude to stay awake during the movie's seemingly endless two-hour running length.

Some romantic/sexual interplay is kept alive by hints and promises, always at arms length. We wouldn't want to gross out the prepubescent sub teenage audience, would we? These filmmakers know where boxoffice coin will be coming from.

It's part travelogue and part James Bond caper, with a thrilling opening and a wonderfully weird finale. ... What's been sandwiched in between is mostly run-of-the-mill stuntwork and gunplay...

Both Tomb Raiders suffer from rampant action-adventure cliches and the sort of lumbering dialogue that harks back to the Saturday morning serials of yore.

The end result is a movie that tries -- and fails -- to be much more than it really is.

After a while, you stop speculating how Croft will wriggle out of each fine mess and start checking your watch.

For every scene of National Geographic -grand photography and showy action stuntwork put together by chick-action veteran director Jan De Bont, a little bit of Jolie's old dangerousness goes missing.

The original "Tomb Raider" was dreadfully dull and still took in almost $300 million at the worldwide box office. Not to worry this time. Oscar winner Angelina Jolie returns to the lead role in all her acrobatic, stunt-filled glory.

Director Jan De Bont barely inspires enough adrenaline-flick flash to hold anyone’s interest — and it doesn't help that he seems overly enamored of slow motion...

The film ironically does the opposite of what an archaeologist is supposed to do - it takes a rare and beautiful treasure and buries it under a ton of junk.
