Let's be honest, that's his only claim to fame- and yeah, it was made back in 1999. Glad to see the marketers didn't go down that road. (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Jun 23 2009 04:39 PM Too much of a teaser for me. With virtually no foreknowledge of this source material I can't tell enough about this film to say one way or another. Could have been about a kid with really good control of his flatulence from what this trailer showed. Although I suppose it'd be call the last wind breaker if that were the case. Ridiculous I know, but this is M. Night Shamaylan we're talking about. (Reply to this) |

ant h. writes: on Jun 23 2009 07:18 PM The kid is Avatar Aang. Only one Avatar is born on planet earth, and once the avatar dies he/she becomes born again in a new body/nation. The Avatar is the only being that can master all four elements- Earth, Wind, Fire, and Water. It's called the last AirBender because the Fire Nation wiped out the entire air nomad race in an attempt to kill the boy. If you never heard of it just watch the show once, you'll love it. And the kid is not weak...he can easily flip ships with his air bending, or toss people around. (Reply to this) |

ColinTheCimmerian writes: on Jun 23 2009 07:26 PM I'm not familiar with the property this is based on, but I may give it a shot. The teaser really doesn't tell us much, but the movie looks well produced at least. I've never thought Shyamalan was a particularly good writer or director, but he's not quite so piss-poor as to not give a fair chance. I think a big problem is his ego, and as has been stated, putting his name over the title probably isn't a good sign in that regard (though we don't know that was his idea; could have been a producer who thought it up). Nevertheless, since it is based on apparently a pretty good tv show, and therefore it's not relying totally on his own creative abilities (which I think are pretty darn marginal), I'll tentatively stay intrigued by this one. I'm curious to see what the full trailer will be like. (Reply to this) |

Bob S. writes: on Jun 23 2009 07:39 PM @dj Mark: Good point, but as far as being on the ropes, I mean something like not being able to make another movie again. I think THE LAST AIRBENDER is going to have a large enough built-in fanbase that this movie will do respectably well at the box office, but then again, DRAGONBALL: EVOLUTION didn't manage to cash in on the legions of pre-teens that love that source material. I agree wholeheartedly that he has some talent. He knows how to frame a shot, knows how to create a mood, and compose a scene. He's fine as a technical director, but needs to stop writing. @Chris B: Good point - the genre change without the obligatory twist ending might do wonders for his filmmaking ability. I think he's so pre-occupied with twists that it interferes with good story progression and logical plot choices. @bigbrother: LMAO @ The Last Windbreaker. (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Jun 23 2009 08:23 PM In reply to this comment (#2515881) By the way, he's not using the staff as a conduit for his power. It's like any warrior's weapon, an extention of his innate power. How one wield the sword, for instance, depends of who he is. If Aang were a fire bender born with a more aggressive nature, I'm sure he'd do fire bending tricks with twin hooks or something like a hanwei dadao. The weapon itself has nothing to do with his power. Less than nothing. As a weapon, in fact, in this particular case is only the staff's secondary purpose. (Reply to this) |

Evan_H writes: on Jun 23 2009 08:52 PM I just want more of the animated show! Why'd they have to go and make it live action with actors who don't match the characters that I grew to love. The movie should have been animated! (Reply to this) |

Matanuki writes: on Jun 24 2009 08:56 AM @ffamilyguy. Don't worry. We don't trust you. ;-) @steve. To dismiss Unbreakable, Sixth Sense, and Signs is telling of how overboard and out of touch you are with your hate of this man's work. Even most of the haters I've talked to share an appreciation for his earlier work. Until he acquired this "ego" that everyone is talking about. Yeah, like that's never happened to anyone in Hollywood. lol. Condemning a Hollywood player for his ego, you might as well go bring a case against the zebra for its stripes. (Reply to this) |

jymmymackiv writes: on Jun 24 2009 09:55 AM Tombstone- I can understand your interpretation of the staff, if indeed it was a magical staff or a conduit. However, the staff is used as a weapon, for balance, but most importantly it is really the character's glider in a condensed form. As for the prophecy thing, there have always been child prophecies WAY before Episode 1. Remember (shudder) The Golden Child? Anyways, Avatar:The Last Airbender is one of the most creative cartoons on TV, simply because it embraces its roots in mythology and uses them in a variety of unexpected ways. (Reply to this) |

ant h. writes: on Jun 24 2009 10:16 AM I'm sure the prophecy is about the Avatar itself since it vanished for a 100 years. The current generation of people have never seen one, and only hear old tales. None of the nations know the Avatar is still a child, but they did know he was going to be born into the Air Nation. Patt B. writes: on Jun 24 2009 02:06 PM In reply to this comment (#2516008) I have to agree, i took The Happening as a comedy and totally enjoyed it. I've seen it a couple times and i still enjoy it on that level. In fact, i can't say i haven't enjoyed all of m night's movies. the man is a genius in my opinion, and people totally under rate him. His movies are deceiving, The Village for example, you probably think it's supposed to be a suspense film or twilight zone-ish, but at it's heart, it is a love story. And that is what is so amazing about m night's films. the same goes for signs, and lady in the water, they both have much more to them then what people expect. I duno, maybe it's just me, but i totally dig anything m. night has to offer, and i expect The Last Airbender to be pretty awesome! especially considering that m night has a co-writer (THANK GOD!). Hopefully he won't have any cameos this time around :/.. (Reply to this) |

rottencapo writes: on Jun 24 2009 10:38 PM I know you can't judge a movie by it's trailer (although I often do), but I personally think that trailer was awesome. Yes...I'm a fan of the series, but they (I say they, because I hate it when the director or producer gets all of the credit) I think they're capturing the essence of the show. SFX will play a heavy roll in the success of this film/ franchise. It's easy to do the air and fire bending, but the key will be how well they do the water and earth bending, without making it to CGI'esk. (Reply to this) |

I think M Night is the perfect guy to be doing this material, he will own it!!! And also, i think you can contribute a lot of the film to the director/producer(s)!!! (Reply to this) |
