Consensus: Though Jolie is appealing, Life or Something Like It is too contrived and predictable to convincingly convey its message of stopping to smell the roses.

She is also engaged to a Seattle Mariners star (Christian Kane). To top off her perfect life, her boss recommends her for a dream job, a network position in New York City. In order to increase her chances, he sends her to do field work with the renowned but difficult cameraman, Pete (Edward Burns). when she's on an assignment, Lanie runs into a homeless man, the prophet Jack (Tony Shalhoub), who makes three predictions: that the Seattle Seahawks will beat the Denver Broncos 19-13, that it will hail the following day, and that she'll be dead by next Thursday. When the first two predictions come true, Lanie reevaluates her life and realizes she's missing out on the smaller things because of her ambition. Jolie is sexy, adorable, and whimsical in her first comedy role. The sizzling banter between Burns and Jolie recalls Rosalind Russell and Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY. LIFE OR SOMETHING LIKE IT is a lovely departure for director Steven Herek (ROCK STAR, BILL AND TED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE). [More]

Mostly about slapping together a bunch of clichés -- outdated clichés at that -- regarding the loneliness of ambitious women.

To enjoy this movie's sharp dialogue and delightful performance by Jolie and Burns, you have to gloss over the no sense ending.

Without Angelina Jolie, this movie wouldn't even be worth renting as a dog-day Tuesday evening video flick..

Seems entirely prefabricated...absurdly contrived and overwrought in a whole variety of bad ways.

The kind of romance that makes a life of solitude seem attractive. The kind of life-affirming story that makes the prospect of death a little less daunting.

Neither Jolie nor Burns bring much to their roles, and their chemistry together is nearly non-existent.

But even with the two-wrongs-make-a-right chemistry between Jolie and Burns...this otherwise appealing picture loses its soul to Screenwriting For Dummies conformity.

Life or Something Like It has its share of high points, but it misses too many opportunities.

Jolie, in a role clearly designed for someone like Meg Ryan, shows us Lanie's vulnerability, inescurity, and her capacity for giddy joy.

Bad movies just don't come any sadder than Life or Something Like It, a shapeless, miserable mess.
