While in a bar, he befriends the similarly alcohol-inclined lawyer W. Firmin Carter (Jared Harris). Through a trail of country club luncheons and cocktail parties, they meet the Van Dyke sisters (Laura Linney and Laurel Holloman), upper crust party girls with busy social calendars. When Carter suddenly goes missing, however, the party's over for Ex, as he's the prime suspect. By the time the last half hour rolls around (and believe me, it takes a long time for that to happen), the film has abandoned any pretense of being coherent and becomes an all-out mess of confusion.
