Barbara Undershaft, a defiant, idealistic daughter of a munitions tycoon, joins the Salvation Army. There, she becomes romantically involved with a Greek scholar named Adolphus. All her lofty visions of the world quickly evaporate, however, when the Army accepts a large sum of money from Barbara's less than noble father -- and Adolphus accepts her dad's offer of a high-paying position.
