Based on the novel by Sinclair Lewis, MANTRAP is one of the few films that offered Clara Bow, Hollywood's It girl, the perfect role for her talents. As Alverna, a Minneapolis manicurist, Bow is the ultimate flapper, a woman dripping with sensuality and youthful innocence. Alverna's big-city style knocks the socks off Joe Easter (Ernest Torrance), a lumpish trading-store owner visiting from the backwoods of Canada. Alverna recklessly marries Easter and takes off with him for the great wilderness. Back at Joe's trading post, Alverna ogles everything in pants, including handsome New York lawyer Ralph Prescott (Percy Marmont), who has come to the woods to get away from the lecherous divorcées he represents. Ralph wants no part of Alverna, but she won't give up on him. After Alverna follows him against his will, Ralph agrees to ask Joe to give Alverna a divorce. Joe hears the conversation, and the two men discuss Alverna's future in front of her. Angry, Alverna returns to Minneapolis, leaving both men behind. Miss Bow's charms combine with lovely outdoor photography and fine performances from Torrance and Marmon to create a witty and enduring romantic comedy. [More]
