Filmed by his longtime companion Anna-MariaTaṭ when Mastroianni was in 72 years old, the film's three hours and twenty minutes seems barely enough to capture the magnificent actor's essence, let alone the one hundred plus films in which he acted. Tracing his life in film from early days on the stage with De Sica, to his salad days as Federico Fellini's favorite doppelganger in such masterpieces as LA DOLCE VITA and 8 1/2, I REMEMBER consists primarily of stately reminiscences and behind-the-scenes insights of Mastroianni, punctuated by clips from a wide variety of his films. The width and breadth of his extraordinary talent is revealed as the viewer sees Mastroianni stretch above and beyond the Latin Lover moniker, playing everything from an impotent husband to an aging tap dancer. Mastroianni's gentle philosophies, gleaned from a lifetime's worth of stories, characters and experiences, are gently expounded upon, as the majestic actor theorizes on everything from nature to television and even unmade film ideas (he wanted more than anything to play an aging TARZAN). While Mastroianni died shortly after I REMEMBER was completed, the film stands as a compelling record and heartfelt love letter to the man and his cinematic legend. [More]

A pleasant documentary about the actor who found just the right vocation for his delight in playing.
