Troy Garrity shines as the mentally challenged Albert Burroughs in Allan Mindel's debut feature film, MILWAUKEE, MINNESOTA. Set in a suburb of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, the well-written tale centers on Albert, a 30-year-old who lives with his domineering mother (Debra Monk) and works for a grizzled old man (Bruce Dern) in a copy store. Albert has amassed a small fortune winning ice-fishing contests, as he has the unique ability to "hear" the fish. When his mother is killed after some suspicious characters show up in town--brother and sister con team Tuey (Alison Folland) and Stan (Hank Harris), and traveling salesman Jerry (Randy Quaid)--it suddenly seems that everyone is after Albert's money, taking advantage of his kindness and the state of his mind. Things are amiss in Mindel's small-town America, which features rape, murder, grifters, transvestites, and lots of lies and deception. Garrity, the son of politician Tom Hayden and actress Jane Fonda, is a standout; audiences will immediately fall for his intelligent, warm, moving portrayal of a simpleminded young man. Strong support is offered by an excellent cast, including Dern, Monk, and Quaid as well as a special appearance by Josh Brolin and Warhol Factory veteran Holly Woodlawn. [More]

Contains all the elements of a charmingly offbeat independent film, but somehow those elements never quite gel.

Garity doesn't break any new Rainman ground here, but Allan Mindel's film has a nice sense of place, and Richard Murphy's script has lots of low-key surprises.

Memorable enough to warrant another shot at director. This film ends in a way that proves Mindel doesn't rely on cliches to make a statement.

Everyone seems to be playing someone else in Allan Mindel's full-of-potential, slight-of-script Milwaukee, Minnesota.

A weird but tasty slice of Midwestern noir.

Most of its cast makes strong impressions, but the plot and motivation don't quite jell, resulting in a minor item that shows its star Troy Garity to good advantage.

More predictable than its makers seem aware, its emotional hooks much too dull to pull us in.

A strange, compelling film, with Mr. Garity as a likeable, winning centerpiece.

Milwaukee, Minnesota is familiar but manages to be unique in flourishes that come when you least expect them.

Allan Mindel is too taken with a Midwestern strain of weirdos who flounder in ramshackle houses, no-tell hotels and depressing juke joints.

Allan Mindel's directing debut gives off the smug air of hipsters at play, making it hard to care what happens to any of its lost souls and inept opportunists.

Solid acting by a cast headed by Troy Garity -- and striking cinematography by Bernd Heinl -- helps redeem Allan Mindel's never-quite-believable crime drama Milwaukee, Minnesota.
