Bob S. writes: on Jun 18 2009 06:10 PM I thought the MISSION:IMPOSSIBLE series was going to have a new director for every installment to keep each movie feeling fresh and different. I think the first and third were the best in the series, with Woo's entry being lackluster. M:I3 had an intensity and urgency to it, and it never let up. It was wall-to-wall with its action, without a single dull moment. It featured a lot of the old tropes, but was executed relatively well. If Abrams is back producing, I'd choose to accept another impossible mission. Also, I'm in the camp that doesn't want to see a Tom Cruise training young 'uns movie, even though that's likely to happen to appeal to the sub-25 year-old demographic that the studios covet so much. BatsInTheBelfry writes: on Jun 18 2009 06:46 PM Have Abrams produce, Cruise star, come up with a great script, and then get the incredibly underrated Alex Proyas to direct it. Like the above poster, I like the difference in each film, make the fourth one a darker, more suspenful film rather than just another action film. (Reply to this) |

screwhead100 writes: on Jun 19 2009 12:26 AM MI3 was the best out of all 3 IMO.....so bring on a 4th with Cruise in the lead!!! a new director(yet talented) and have him give a new look to the franchise...... i mean roger moore did what 7 bond movies.....so Cruise is good for at least another 3 or 4 films......but in no way am i comparing performances here, just the length of which they played a certain character.... Cole_Cash writes: on Jun 19 2009 06:58 AM I liked all three MI movies because they are so different. Depalmas MI1 was my least favorite but I did enjoy the mystery aspect of it. The plot jumps around a little too much. I loved the second MI because John Woo knows how to film and shoot action-porn which is all that movie was. I don't care that the plot is absurd. The rock climbing scene at the start, the bmw/porsche race, the motorcycle balet and I really liked the villain. If you think about MI2, it's very similar to Wanted. I also enjoyed the third MI film. I admit there wasn't many stand-out moments but it definitely was entertaining. Abrams seems to have excellent taste in Casting Directors. The actors that are chosen for rolls in his films and television series always seem to fit together well. After Star Trek I will watch anything Abrams makes. (Reply to this) |

rle4lunch writes: on Jun 19 2009 09:42 AM MI2 was visually beautiful, just dumb. All the slo-mo shots (I'm looking to that retarded catching the scarf scene), and the flubs with the motorcross tires on sport bikes and the irreverent way that the bikes switched back and forth from street to dirt tire shots (in slow-mo no less), was just plain sloppy. Even Michael Bay wouldn't flub something like that. Which Woo clearly rips off direction from all the time. (Reply to this) |

Bob S. writes: on Jun 19 2009 10:17 AM In reply to this comment (#2514541) @rle4lunch: I'm by no means a fan of John Woo's American films; however, his Hong Kong movies are fantastic. HARD BOILED, A BETTER TOMORROW, THE KILLER, and RED CLIFF (PARTS 1 and 2) were all awesome. He has a knack for creating conflicted action characters that have some depth and emotional resonance, which the likes of Bay, Tony Scott, and other style-over-substance directors have proven unable to grasp. He has the fixation with the doves and the hero jumping laterally in slow motion with guns blazing, but he also has some competence with character development and tension-building, which makes him a better-than-average action director. rle4lunch writes: on Jun 19 2009 10:33 AM @ Bob S. Personally, I grew out of Asian flicks. Once they started hitting main stream America it seemed to get way out of control with the ridiculousness of them. There's a few that I will still watch, but all in all, they seem to take themselves way too seriously. Maybe if I could understand Mandarin or other Chinese dialects, I would enjoy them more and appreciate the 'acting'.. But I can't. As a result, I get a giant, MEH, while watching many of the Chinese and Japanese movies. (Reply to this) |

Christopher256G writes: on Jun 29 2009 02:54 PM @rle4lunch John Woo has at least some style (though by no means is it perfect) and you can understand what is happening; Bay just puts together loud horribly edited garbage with little sense of any coherence or style. Bay is the director of films for people with attension defecit disorder. I would take MI2 easily over anything Bay has done since the Rock. I'm in favor of another Mission. To me all the movies are just solid films. The first was the over complicated thriller/action film, the second was the silly action film, and third was something in between, not as complicated as the first and not as silly as the second. Abrams is the right director I think. (Reply to this) |
