Consensus: Although this action-romance suffers from weak writing and one too many explosions, the chemistry generated by onscreen couple Pitt and Jolie is palpable enough to make this a thoroughly enjoyable summer action flick.

Runtime: 2 hrs 10 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

US Box Office: $186,064,011

SMITH is really its own ball of flaming wax, with enough sizzling chemistry between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to blow up a small building. He shows he is equally adept in comedy and action, and she manages to set new screen standards of bad-ass sexiness. It's impossible to dislike this pair, or a movie that makes being married seem like such insane fun. Pitt and Jolie play extremely skilled professional assassins who have managed to stay married for five years without ever realizing each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on. Thanks to a genuinely witty script, the issue isn't who will win, but whether the couple will realize they are meant for each other before it's too late. Director Doug Liman was obviously the right choice for the material, having proved his ability to fuse engaging romance with knuckle-biting action in 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. The comedy is sophisticated and witty, the action is visceral and intense, and there is plenty of satisfying eye candy. Another plus is Vince Vaughn as a fast-talking fellow hit man who lives with his mother. The cinematography is by Bozan Bajelli (the genius behind Abel Ferrara's best mid-1980s work) who imbues each environment, whether it's the Smith's house, or the urban streets--with its own evocative color scheme and feel. A film with enough snap, crackle and pop to keep the gob of any sceptic shut for a couple of hours.

Failing to make a commitment to character development or genre, Mr. & Mrs. Smith feels like a bad relationship that goes on way too long.

Have we lost our minds and souls so completely to celebrity worship that drivel like Mr. and Mrs. Smith can thrive and prosper?

More attention is lavished on the fight and chase scenes than the relatively superficial message, but you don’t go to a big budget summer movie in search of Ingmar Bergman.

Complaints about character triviality aside, if you're in assassin mode you might want to line up the Smiths in your sights for an explosive summertime escapade.

Should have been funnier, or at least not played the dramatic irony card so soon...lags and uneven pacing kill the chemistry.

If you factor out Jolie's eye-candy quotient, what remains of Mr. and Mrs. Smith could barely fit into a box of Junior Mints.

The stars' sizzle plus dialogue to die for and stylish direction make Mr. and Mrs. Smith a summer hit.

But this isn't about plot, it's about snappy banter and blowing stuff up! Silly fictions hitting each other, right?. What more do you want, Philosophy?

Somewhere among the impossibly athletic gunplay and impossibly witty sparring by two impossibly attractive leads is a sly, incisive metaphor for the modern American marriage.

The filmmakers thought that the combined star power of Pitt and Jolie rendered inessential the need for a coherent narrative, basic structure and an actual resolution.

since the dialogue is so spectacularly good, we care as much about these two facing their "relationship" as we do watching them, well, beat the crap out of each other.

...a stylish and slick romantic romp that is a sheer blast...a stimulating actioner that is quite funny and visually appetizing.
