Consensus: Although this action-romance suffers from weak writing and one too many explosions, the chemistry generated by onscreen couple Pitt and Jolie is palpable enough to make this a thoroughly enjoyable summer action flick.

Runtime: 2 hrs 10 mins

Genre: Action/Adventure

US Box Office: $186,064,011

SMITH is really its own ball of flaming wax, with enough sizzling chemistry between stars Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt to blow up a small building. He shows he is equally adept in comedy and action, and she manages to set new screen standards of bad-ass sexiness. It's impossible to dislike this pair, or a movie that makes being married seem like such insane fun. Pitt and Jolie play extremely skilled professional assassins who have managed to stay married for five years without ever realizing each other's profession because they work for rival agencies and the work is top secret. When their paths eventually cross on a high-level hit, one of the most lethal battles of the sexes in the history of cinema is officially on. Thanks to a genuinely witty script, the issue isn't who will win, but whether the couple will realize they are meant for each other before it's too late. Director Doug Liman was obviously the right choice for the material, having proved his ability to fuse engaging romance with knuckle-biting action in 2002's THE BOURNE IDENTITY. The comedy is sophisticated and witty, the action is visceral and intense, and there is plenty of satisfying eye candy. Another plus is Vince Vaughn as a fast-talking fellow hit man who lives with his mother. The cinematography is by Bozan Bajelli (the genius behind Abel Ferrara's best mid-1980s work) who imbues each environment, whether it's the Smith's house, or the urban streets--with its own evocative color scheme and feel. A painfully incoherent action-comedy.

Like a relationship you may want to think carefully about committing to, it puts you through an awful lot to get to the good stuff.

cool but silly, stylish but senseless, this high-concept blockbuster is a failed hybrid of screwball comedy, action-adventure, spy-thriller and marital drama

Mr. & Mrs. Smith is an action comedy for suburban women that's as toothless as a newborn, and nearly as stupid.

A giddy piece of entertainment that nearly achieves greatness before some meddling, perhaps, kept him from delivering the finale the film deserves.

More evocative of Fred Astaire than James Bond, John's killer athleticism reflects a general quickness of mind.

It's a hit, man (no, it's two hitmen, which makes it twice as entertaining).

Pitt and Jolie have sexual chemistry to burn in Mr. & Mrs. Smith, a sharply funny comedy-thriller that is a rare instance of a movie getting better as it goes along.

The problem is that nothing matters. It's just two very attractive people shooting at each other and blowing things up.

Exasperatingly senseless, silly thriller weighed down with absurd action and overblown violence.

... A wonderful take on the action-comedy with twisted humor worthy of Hitchcock.

Gets some kicks out of smashing elements of romantic comedy into the staples of the spy movie.

Liman has a terrific gift for staging action, and each successive picture he’s made has found the filmmaker more confident with budget and tonal changes.

With no glint of interpersonal chemistry, Mr. and Mrs. Smith is sent off to hobble on crutches of weak one-liners and weaker shoot'em up scenes.
