RT on DVD: Mummy 3, Grindhouse on Blu-ray!
Audiences of a certain age may remember Disney's 1989 film The Little Mermaid as one of the more memorable Disney fairytale flicks of the past few decades; now they can share Ariel's story (and sequel and prequel) with their kids with The Little Mermaid Trilogy box set!
To catch you up: in The Little Mermaid, rebellious teen mermaid Ariel trades her voice to an evil sea witch in return for a pair of human legs, which help her walk, dance, and nab the man of her dreams...but at what cost? In the 2000 sequel, The Little Mermaid II, Ariel's human daughter Melody finds herself banned from the sea -- cruel irony! -- yet gets lured into a trap by another evil witch. Finally, in The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginning, we find out where she got her lifelong love for whosits and whatsits and that she first met her shellfish buddy Sebastian when he was singing at an underground (underwater?) music club...which actually explains a lot.

on Dec 15 2008 04:14 PM Mummy 3 - A Rental Mamma Mia - A Rental (I'm a ABBA fan, so maybe I will love it and get it, but I will rent it first) Doctor Horrible: Already Preordered on Amazon. I will receive only after Christmas tough, according to their prevision. Traitor: Wow, lokks solid. A definitive rental. The Little Mermaids Trilogy: I remember seeing the second one a looooong time ago. Really, who watch those Direct-to Dvd sequels anymore? The only good one was The Lion King II, and even then... Dirty Dancing Workout: I've had the time of my life... Damn, now I will have this song in my head all day. Thanks RT! (This movie is my mom's favorite movie since she is young. She got the soundtrack on Vinyl, Audiocassette, CD and the movie on DVD. ) (Reply to this) |

on Dec 15 2008 05:18 PM I won't be getting anything this week. I recommend Traitor, I think it is a good rental. I will rent Dr. Horrible and Generation Kill. Just a heads up, don't get Planet Terror/Death Proof on Blu because it is a total waste of money since they are going to release a box set with the faux trailers and Robert.R even said so on the DVD. Man, almost one more week til Christmas! I cant wait, I just asked for dvds and movie books, did anyone else ask for DVDs? I know I am getting The Wire set and probably some other flicks. on Dec 15 2008 06:24 PM This week we have "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", one of the worst movies of the year, or so I've heard. The first Mummy was goofy hokey fun with likable characters, (9/10), but "The Mummy Returns" was garbage, my dad liked it, my brother liked it, I hated it. Brendan Fasier and Racheal Weiz were bored, the kid was annoying, there was too much loud stupid action, and the plot had some serious deja vu. From what I hear, "The Mummy Returns" is as good as "Iron Man" in comparisson to "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor", so I'm skipping it. "The Mummy Returns" = 2/10. I heard Roger Ebert say it was the best Mummy yet. Now, I've never met Roger, but use to watch him on TV, I still watch the old episodes, and read his reviews of films every week, I feel like I know him and I don't know if I'd feel the same about movies without him, but 3 stars for "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor"?! Well, he's his own critic that's for sure. This could turn into an disscusion about Ben Mankeweiz and Ben Lyons on "At the Movies" now, so I'll just say they're not as good as Roger Ebert, Gene Siskel, Richard Roeper, or Micheal Phillips, but in their own right I find them to be good critics. on Dec 15 2008 06:39 PM Also there's "Mamma Mia!", which looks bad to me due to poor singing (mostly by Pierce "The Animal" Bronsan), and that got nominated for Best Picture at the Golden Globes. And "The Dark Knight", "Iron Man", and "WALL-E" were not. Think about that for a second. Also there's The Little Mermaid trilogy is released. Oh goody, one great movie... and two lousy films. Okay, I haven't seen the sequels but I have a theatrical film bias. I think the first I might pick up, I'm an animated film buff (wait, no I'm a film buff in general) and "The Little Mermaid" saved Disney's butt and paved the way for "Aladdin" and "The Lion King" and "Beauty and the Beast". Damn, I hope there was something I could pick for my brother this week, since it's his birthday. I guess I'll just pick up an older DVD of a GOOD movie. (Reply to this) |

I hadn't really thought about it until the critic from Time magazine said "The Day the Earth Stood Still" was "the worst major release in what may be the most disastrous year in recent Hollywood history." 2008 was a CRUMMY year! With the exception of the obvious (Wall-E, Dark Knight, Iron Man and a couple of others), this year will go down as the year of horrible movies. Movies that bombed, movies that disappointed horribly, to movies that did okay but will be completely forgotten by this time next year ('Wanted', and I LOVE Bekmambetov's "Nightwatch" series, 'Quantum of Solace'). In fact, according to RT itself, only 12 of the top 100 rated movies for 2008 saw wide release. Hollywood's death knell? Probably not, but certainly an ill omen. on Dec 15 2008 07:24 PM 2008? Crummy? I disagree with you sir. I think this was a great year film, much better than last year. All the films I've seen this year I think range from good to great. Of course, I avoid things that look like garbage like "Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" or "The Clone Wars". And of course we had three cheap parody... for lack of a better word... movies released, so there were some stinkers, but I find this to be a great year in film. Yes, great! (Reply to this) |

on Dec 15 2008 10:59 PM dark knight is a masterpiece of ITS GENRE. compared to other movies, it's good, but not incredible. also, i just finished reading no country for old men, and was reminded of the movie (which sticks very close to the book--the coens did an amazing job); i think chigurh anticipates nolan's joker--AND two face. i think sometimes we heap praise upon TDK because it did some things we see in mainstream cinema--like praising sarah palin for her debate performance even though she only did okay. on Dec 16 2008 12:05 AM Dr. Horrible was great. I loved it. Mamma Mia was fun. I loved the play (seen it four times for work) and the movie was a good version. Other then Pierce Brosnan being possibly one of the worst voices heard on the screen, the cast was great, the music, it's abba, no comment needed. Random Jake is right though, it is up there in awesomeness to The Dark Knight, actually it might be up there in total awesomeness to those great 80's classics, either Thrasher or Rad.
