Robert Zemeckis and Jim Carrey Team Up for "A Christmas Carol"
We haven't had a major (or good) adaptation of "A Christmas Carol" for a while now. Specifically, it's been 15 years since "The Muppet Christmas Carol." Well, good things come to boys and girls who wait: Empire reports Robert Zemeckis is prepping to film the classic Charles Dickens novel with Jim Carrey.
Carey will be playing Ebenezer Scrooge and the three ghosts who come to spook him out on Christmas Eve. Zemeckis wrote the screenplay with Carrey in mind.
Bob Hoskins will co-star in "A Christmas Carol," which will be filmed in the same creepy-cool animation style of Zemeckis' "The Polar Express" and his upcoming "Beowulf."
"[Zemeckis is] going to make 'A Christmas Carol' with Jim Carrey," Hoskins said. "He wants me to play Mr. Fezziwig. He's doing in that way he did 'Polar Express.' You stand in a box with that funny suit on and it reads everything you do. Am I going to do it? Of course I am!"

"Learn the meaning of Christmas again? Hmm..."
This is the first time Hoskins and Zemeckis will work together since the awesome "Who Framed Roger Rabbit." Zemeckis' next film, "Beowulf," based on the epic poem and starring Ray Winstone and Crispin Glover, will be out in theaters November 21.

Sputnik99 writes: on Jul 06 2007 01:49 PM Hoo Boy. Another cheese-ball adaptation of a burned into the ground Christmas tale. And to do it in this no-good new style with Jim Carrey in the suit pretty much guarantees I'll pass on seeing it. Can't anyone in the last 50 years write a new christmas story? Or do we have to keep hearing the same 100-year old ones over and over and over and over and over and over... (Reply to this) |

Bigbrother writes: on Jul 06 2007 03:11 PM In reply to this comment (#910564) You mean Scrooge wasn't a duck with no pants? The story makes no sense then. A man walking around with no pants on is just perverse. How did Dickens get that one past the sensor? (Reply to this) |

Crenshaw writes: on Jul 06 2007 03:11 PM Could be good. The recent George C. Scott version - I think is was made for TV - is very good. Of course nothing compares to the Alastair Sim version. And I doubt anything ever will. I remember HBO had a Rich Little Christmas Carol when I was a kid and HBO was a young pup. Man that sucked. (Reply to this) |

Segkee writes: on Jul 06 2007 03:17 PM This is a fantastic story. One of the first that truly fucked with my head as a child. Carrey could be excellent. I hope they keep it nice and dark. Even the Disney version messed with me. I was looking back at some Disney cartoons recently and they're totally fucked. DUMBO is a trip and a half. I'm not sure it was being racist or fighting racsim. It really captured the sense of dread a child feels growing up. As for A CHRISTMAS CAROL... Bill Murray rocked it... some of the imagery and themes are so messed up. A crippled boy. Facing your own death. Being haunted by your crimes. Got to love it. (Reply to this) |

zgberg writes: on Jul 06 2007 03:38 PM Scrooged was the best I'm a Bill Murray fan and Scrooged is the best adaptation to date. I haven't written Jim Carrey off completely, but with each successive film, he seems to lose more and more of what made him great (Fire Marshall Bill!). (Reply to this) |

TheIceGhost writes: on Jul 06 2007 09:41 PM Been there, done that. And I must say, A Muppet's Christmas Carol is (imo) the coolest version (and yes, seeing that MCC was made 15 years ago makes me feel incredibly old. I WAS 5 WHEN IT CAME OUT!!)! (Reply to this) |

Demmi writes: on Jul 06 2007 09:51 PM Here I sigh at yet another adaption of "a christmas carol" in the same boring computer generated way as every animated movie in the past four years. C'mon Zemeckis, stop with this C.G obsession and go back to live action again, or at least go back to the classic hand drawn style of animation. (Reply to this) |

baufan2005 writes: on Jul 07 2007 12:43 PM yes, I even had the opportunity to watch Stewart do the stage version to. He did every single part himself. He would recite one person's lines then turn around and do the others, it was great. The only thing he had to do though was three or four short 15 min breaks. (Reply to this) |
