Consensus: A talented cast goes to waste in the improbable National Treasure: Book of Secrets, which is eerily similar to the first film.

Ben and his father, Patrick (Jon Voight), take great pride in their ancestors and their family's devotion to the United States. When Mitch Wilkinson (Ed Harris) produces a page from the diary of Lincoln assassin John Wilkes Booth allegedly linking Ben's great-great grandfather to the plot, Ben and Patrick set out on a path to clear their family's name. Ben also believes that the diary page contains hints to the whereabouts of a treasure map leading to an ancient city made of gold, and soon the hunt is on. Tech expert Riley Poole (Justin Bartha) and Ben's now ex-girlfriend Abigail Chase (Diane Kruger) join the Gates in their quest, which takes them from Washington, DC, to Paris, London and the Black Hills of South Dakota. It's true that the storyline and the actions of Gates and his team--which include breaking into the Queen's study at Buckingham Palace, sneaking into the Oval Office, and kidnapping the President of the United States--are completely unbelievable. But with a storyline built on true, interesting trivia and great locations, this film is an amusing, family-friendly romp. Cage has some great moments as Gates-- loyal, patriotic, fair to a fault, and very funny as he goads on Buckingham Palace security. Harris plays Wilkinson with just the right air of mystery and menace: is he after fortune, or does he just want to leave his own mark in history? Helen Mirren fits the bill as Ben's mother and Patrick's estranged ex-wife, Emily, a scholar and historian in her own right. [More]

A little sillier than the original, and a little stupider, and somehow it still manages to be shockingly enjoyable.

In a story even more far fetched than the last one, Nic Cage and company prove that enjoyable characters can make up for a lot of bad plot.

This just might be the silliest movie ever to feature three Academy Award winners.

Leave it to coproducer Jerry Bruckheimer to revive the Indiana Jones cycle without the period setting, the camp elements, or Spielberg's efficiency; director Jon Turteltaub just plods along.

Probable box-office success doesn't keep it from being a largely uninspired concoction.

There's no question all involved had a blast, but there's little here beyond a confusing popcorn flick.

There's sounder logic and more genuine sleuthing in a 'Scooby Doo' cartoon.

an exercise in silliness, but it’s also undeniably a great deal of fun

Familiarity doesn't breed contempt here, but it's so familiar as to keep us from getting caught up in the scavenger hunt this time around.

Continuing the whodunit/where-is-it/what-does-it-mean formula, it's a fun-filled romp, chock-full-of-historical trivia.

Mirren and Voight provide much of the fun here as their characters argue about who's responsible for their divorce and longtime estrangement.

Almost unconscionably lousy sequel to 2004's equally bad Dan Brown rip-off is only made worse by its staggering waste of talent.

Monumentally silly...But viewers looking for the dumbest sort of escapism are likely to be satisfied.

[The film is entertaining, but] the best part is a Goofy cartoon that is running ahead of it.

Book of Secrets is a perfect family or holiday movie -- one that will keep parents' attention but not terrify their kids in the process.

Since Book of Secrets doesn't take its faux-intricate story seriously, there's no reason this review should either.
