He plays Jake MacIllaney, a hard-nosed labor boss vying for the presidency of the local longshoreman union -- and who would like to head the entire organization. To achieve his goal, MacIllaney stoops pretty low, raising $500,000 for his campaign through a local bookie. To make the entire operation seem legit, MacIllaney employs the services of a proper, fledgling Ivy league trained lawyer.
