Mac Says "Ocean's 13" Kicks "12's" Butt"
Of course every actor is going to say his next movie is great before it comes out. Only Brad Pitt had the balls to bash "The Devil's Own." But some are more convincing than others. Bernie Mac put "Ocean's 13" in perspective, explaining how they made it the best film of the trilogy.
"By making a bad film the second time," Mac admitted. "That is a perfect example of pimping. That's a perfect example of not being true and honest to yourself. I don't want to do that. But my connection with the boys, I couldn't say no. I can't say no to Soderbergh, 'Bernie, we want you in this.' I was doing 'Guess Who' at the time too and flying all over, that's how I got pneumonia. Flying all over the world, I just got through the television show 20 hours. No, I'm not doing it next time. Okay?' I said, 'Man, this script is booty. I didn't know if it was 'Mission Impossible' or what? What are we doing?' but you can't say nothing."

So, not only is "Ocean's 13" going to undo all that damage, it's also another milestone for Mac. "Let me tell you something. I hate to compare anything, especially while I'm promoting. I feel that's disrespect. But 'Ocean's 13' is the best movie I've ever done in my life. No question, you're playing with the boys, and because it's personal. You've got all the boys, all my buddies over there. We've got George and Don Cheadle and Carl Reiner, Elliott Gould, Matt Damon, a sweetheart, we have Brad and all the boys. You can't say no. It's Soderbergh, you can't say no to Soderbergh. You can't say no, dude."
Well, not saying no got him in trouble the last time, but "13" brought Mac's game up. In addition to the regulars, the new cast mates raise the bar. "This one is good. You've got my man Al Pacino in there and Al Pacino, man, let me tell you something. I'm not quickly intimidated being an athlete and from where I come from. But Al Pacino is one of my mentors. When I said, 'Man, I've got a scene with Al Pacino today, whew.' God damn. Then when Al Pacino came in, I said, 'Hey Al Pacino.' He said, 'Bernie Mac!' And I said, 'Wow, man.' I called my wife. I said, 'Man, Al Pacino today, dude.' She said, 'Man, Mac, you know you're going to do it.' I said, 'Yeah, I know but when I saw him, I was like damn, you know.' I kept watching him, man."
"Ocean's 13" hits theaters this June.

on Mar 04 2007 12:38 PM In reply to this comment (#857217) What's so bad about 12? Yeah, I didn't like it as much as Ocean's Eleven, in fact, it's not even close, but I still thought it was good. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 04 2007 02:52 PM Ocean's 12 was, if anything, guilty of some sloppy editing, a minorly difficult storyline that didn't update us on where it was enough, and that's really about it. I laughed at it as much as I did the first one. I didn't think it was as good an overall movie as the first one was, but that, "Oh, so that's how they did it," moment wasn't any less satisfying at the end. And the bit with Bruce Willis, which I've heard turned some people off to it, was in my opinion inspired. I don't get all of the hating. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 04 2007 05:00 PM Excited about this I loved 11, didn't like 12. I felt that 12 was a copout movie with a copout twist in the end. The thing I loved with 11 was that in the process of fooling the bad guy, they were able to fool the audience. That's what makes it great. In 12, they were more concerned about fooling the audience more than anything else. I mean, all that trouble, doing the Julia Roberts scene, other failed tactics, just to fool the bad guy into doing a heist that you already did(the awful bag switch in the train tactic) weeks ago? That movie was a copout. And it ruined the idea at the end of 11 that they got away with the Bellagio Heist scot free. I hope 13 is better. 13 has to be better. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 04 2007 05:06 PM I'm real excited for Ocean's 13. Bernie Mac's is probably my least favorite one of the characters, but he delivers some pretty hilarious lines . "Might always call it WHITEJACK! " I'm a big fan of the Ocean series. Big fan. (Reply to this) |
on Mar 05 2007 10:02 AM I personally despised Ocean's 12, it tried to be slick, cool and funny. It achieved none of those, just ended confusing and plodding. However I did love Ocean's 11, so I'm hoping Ocean's 13 will be the sequel that 12 should have been. And Al Pacino joining the cast can only be a good thing. :) (Reply to this) |

on Mar 05 2007 11:27 AM Ugh... 12. First off... Was ANYTHING Bernie Mac said in that interview an actual sentence? Secondly, 12 was bad. I liked 11 because they tricked you, and then they showed you WHERE they tricked you. You always could have figured it out by sheer luck, or following really closely. Ocean's 12 on the other hand...there was this whole, "...Meanwhile, off camera...we did everything!" sequence that absolutely killed the movie. I wanted to pour soda on the floor and walk out of the theater at that point. So, what I'm saying is...It shouldn't be hard to top 12. :) (Reply to this) |

on Mar 05 2007 01:26 PM Can I say one thing about Ocean's 12 that we should all be able to agree upon?: Katherine Zeta Jones looked so flippin' hot the whole time I couldn't stand up 'till 20 minutes after the film ended. (Reply to this) |

on Mar 05 2007 03:53 PM 11 is one of my all-time top favorite films. It was the epitome of why we go to the movies, in my view. I walked out feeling refreshed and like I completely enjoyed myself. 12 failed because, really, at its core there was no "heist" The first film made it all about the heist of the casinos and the only real big job was the scene on the train with the switch. Supremely disappointing. That said, 13 looks to get back on the right track. I don't know how well we can trust Bernie Mac's judgements but I'm definitely more stoked for this film than I am for "Spider-Man 3" (Reply to this) |

on Mar 06 2007 10:25 PM Love this series. I've said it on here so many times, but I can't help it. I liked 12 because it reminded me of really bad Italian TV, but I think that's what they were going for. Bring it on. I'm excited. (Reply to this) |
on Apr 13 2007 06:23 AM I didn't like 12. 12 failed because the plot was not good, the end is pathetic, and the bad guy was not really bad, (capoeira is ok for a videoclip but not for a film). There was not enemy and the new girl, Zeta Jones looked as always a few inspirated actress, a good presence and nothing else. (Reply to this) |
