Cyd Morse works in a Florida nightclub as a mermaid mime while dreaming of becoming a famous star. One day, she meets Woody, an ex-jockey who falls in love with her. The one-time athlete now runs his own stud-farm and, with a millionaire partner, John K. Sasser, he buys a new racehorse. Woody asks Cyd to marry him, but the wedding never comes to pass because his greedy business associate sends a hitman to slay the former jockey. Before he dies, however, Woody manages to give Cyd a clue to his murder: a heart drawn in blood. Cyd runs off, with the villains in hot pursuit. On the road, she gets mixed up with Jack Cornett, a failed ex-golfer, and Pompey, the son of a prostitute whose purse she stole.
