This 1977 Abbey Road recording of Messaien's gorgeous and moving Turangalila Symphonie (originally commissioned by Serge Koussevitsky for the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and first performed in December 1949) is one of the most acclaimed and famous that exists. Messian's symphony is ultimately a love song inspired by the famous story of Tristan and Isolde.
