Divorced Marine officer Mary Jane O' Malley (Anne Heche) begins an affair with commanding officer Major Nelson Gray (Sam Shepard) before she knows that he is married. When she makes this discovery, she attempts to end the relationship, but Gray is adamant about it continuing. When he attacks her in her own home, she is forced to shoot him in self defense. With Gray dead, O'Malley finds herself involved in both a complicated court case as well as a coverup spearheaded by fellow officers trying to protect her good name.
