Boss Spearman (ROBERT DUVALL), Charley Waite (KEVIN COSTNER), Mose Harrison (ABRAHAM BENRUBI) and "Button" (DIEGO LUNA) freegraze their cattle across the vast prairies of the West, sharing a friendship forged by a steadfast code of honor and living a life unencumbered by civilization. When their wayward herd forces them near the small town of Harmonville, the cowboys encounter a corrupt Sheriff (JAMES RUSSO) and kingpin rancher (MICHAEL GAMBON) who govern the territory through fear, tyranny and violence. Boss and Charley find themselves inextricably drawn towards the inevitable showdown as they are forced to defend the freedom and values of a lifestyle that is all too quickly vanishing. Amidst this turmoil, life suddenly takes an unexpected turn for loner Charley when he meets the beautiful and warm-spirited Sue Barlow (ANNETTE BENING), a woman who embraces both his heart and his soul. As these courageous men prepare for the decisive battle that looms, they are also forced to confront and conquer their own internal demons. -- © Touchstone Pictures [More]

Reviews for Open Range
If you grew up on Westerns, which are now an old-time religion, Open Range is a ride you want to share.
Easily qualifies as the best Western since Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven.
Open Range is not the Western’s last hurrah, but it may be Costner’s.
A rousing addition to that most American of film genres, the western.
An awesome compendium of cowboy-movie cliches. It borders on parody, and often crosses the border, rustling up a drove of oater aphorisms.
Costner delivers a methodical paean to the old west and to old westerns.
Open Range is too talky, too corny and too long. Yet it gets so much right, from its simple affection for the sight of horses at full gallop to a climactic gunfight that sets a new standard for wit and excitement and right- eous revenge.
Kevin Costner is back in the saddle again, and people are going to start using "Oscar" and "Costner" in the same sentence again.
Kevin Costner's new Western is a showdown movie in the mold of High Noon, but because it's Costner, nothing really happens until, like, 3:15.
Robert Duvall brings an authenticity to his performances that puts any movie he appears in ahead of the game from the start.
A juicy, character-driven western with a real plot that spins a hypnotic narrative.
Costner doesn't seek to reinvent the classic Westerns as much as simply honor them. On those modest terms, he succeeds.
There's a fine little western lurking inside Open Range: Too bad it gets drowned out by director Kevin Costner's pretentiousness.
A film that recycles familiar elements from a variety of cowboy classics but still establishes and maintains its own unique sensibility.
