Box Office Wrapup: Open Season Shoots Up #1 Opening
by Gitesh Pandya | October 02, 2006
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Ashton Kutcher ambushed the top two spots at the North American box office this weekend playing an animated mule and a Coast Guard rookie in Open Season and The Guardian, respectively. Both films enjoyed strong openings pumping in a combined $40M and helped the marketplace beat last year's levels for the first time in four weeks. The weekend's other new wide release, the comedy School for Scoundrels, saw more modest results with a fourth place bow. Back to Article

considering the crap thats out there right now, it's not that surprising Ashton Kutcher would top the box-office

But then again, even when the oscar favorites like "The Departed" and "Babel" come out, mainstream audiences will still flock to see crap like this

I would've prefered to see "Jackass 2" and "Fearless" still at the top, they are at least half-way decent films

Next week it will be TCM2. I can not wait. The first best horror film this year.

Unfortunatly, "The Departed" will not be the number 1 movie, neither will TCM2,

"Employee of the Month" will be. Worldwide "Texas Chainsaw Massacer" will make a lot, also way more than the "Departed"

Reality needs to be faced: "Daycare" perfectly represents the mainstream audience- these are people who look at advertisments the same way art fans look at paintings or photographs- there is no use arguing with them about it (hope that doesn't sound too pretentious, but it's true)

TCM2 will be number 1. Why. It is the fisrt horror movie to come out in a long time. The remake was a big hit with good word mouth. It is horror mouth. And the theater number. Martin films never dogood when it comes to boxoffice. More people will see TCM2 mainstream audience. i mean last year this time, how in the hell do you think the fog was number 1 in the boxoffice. The departed will not be number 1 because it will only get martin fans it will always get.

Daycare is right. TCM2 will be number 1 because of the kind of movie it is. All because the departed is getting good reviews do not mean people are going to run to it. TCM2 trailer have been seen the most on BET and MTV. Why, because that is the people who are going to see this film. I hate to bring race into this but TCM2 will get more of the black race then any other movie out there. Why, because movies like the departed do not have black people in the good roles nor do EOTM. if the Departed had a mixed cast like Four Brothers did, then you will have all kind of people. It do not. That is why mostly people are going to see TCM2. PLus. TCM2 is a short movie, that mean that there can be more showing per theater. Plus TCM2 has 2 prints per theater and the Departed has 1 print. Sorry but the TCM2 will be big just like saw 3 and TG2. It is Horror movie month.

Curtis, if TCM2 isn't very long it won't play any more than 6 times a day for a single print. THE DEPARTED, if it's over 2 hours would probably play 5 times for a single print. Not a major difference.

Also, all theaters don't get the same number of prints.

True, but the TCM2 will have 2 prints in just about all theaters. the Dparted will have 1. 12 times a day is a bigger difference then 5 times.

I saw School for Scoundrels, it was ok, it would have been way better with someone other than Heder in it. Open Season was pretty good, amusing yet retarded at times. I'm glad The Queen, The Last King of Scotland, and The Science of Sleep all did good in limited release. I'm really looking forward to The Departed, TCM2 could be alright.

Ugh.

It's not TCM2. It's a PREQUEL. Prequels =/= Sequels.

Oi.

To say these films don't appeal to black audiences is only somewhat true The best show on TV is "The Wire" on HBO. It contains a majority black cast, yet I know only one black person whose actually heard of it, none that watch it.

The truth is, most blacks in America live in their own communities, the majority of which are low income. Movies like "The Departed" have a limited amount of advertising dollars, so the studio would rather target wealthier communities, assuiming that minorities are not "enlightened" enough to see "artsy" films, and it would be waste of an already limited budget

Where I went to highschool it was mostly black (I was the only white kid in my whole graduating class) yet all my friends there still flocked to see big-budget films with white majority casts no matter how bad they actually were simply because the studios had enough money to spare advertising dollars within their community
