The film offers plenty of kid-level humor (as well as a few references adults will pick up on), a decent story and, as you might guess, a positive message.

From the creators of 2002's wildly successful Jonah--A VeggieTales Movie comes a new story of heroism in the beloved VeggieTales' world, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything Now, we follow the comic misadventures of three animated veggie pals who reluctantly set sail for adventure and discover that real heroes don't have to be tall, strong, handsome...or even human.
Garrrrr! Working at the Pieces of Ate Dinner Theater is less than exciting when you're a busboy. For three moping misfits-- Elliot, Sedgewick and George (Larry the Cucumber, Mr. Lunt and Pa Grape)-all they dream of is the day when they can ditch their dishrags and take stage to star in the big pirate show.
But with Elliot's timidity, Sedgewick's laziness and George's lack of self-confidence, it seems as if the day to prove who they really are will never come...
Things are about to change when a mysterious ball drops from the sky and lands at the unlikely seafarers' feet. A "Helpseeker" sent from the past in search of heroes, the artifact sets in motion a series of events that drags the friends back to the 17th century--and into the belly of certain danger. The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything must each face their fears--becoming unlikely heroes in a battle to rescue a royal family from an evil tyrant, and themselves from living the life of common couch potatoes.
The latest in a franchise that has sold more than 50 million units since its 1993 inception, The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything--A VeggieTales Movie continues the hit series' values-based lessons in teaching kids what it really means to be a hero. --© Universal Pictures

Reviews for The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything - A Veggietales...
As I wasn’t expecting much, I must say that Pirates doesn’t disappoint.
It's full of mild goofiness and equally mild messages about believing in yourself. It's all good-natured enough. It just isn't actually good.
Not only did I want to go to sleep the entire time, but I wouldn't watch this movie again if you told me my life depended on it.
The colorful but limited animation can seem static on the big screen, but the gentle humor and equally gentle lessons will appeal to younger children and long-time fans.
Is it a coincidence or an animator's inside joke that the veggies' innocent smiles of joy look exactly like Cartman's when he enters a room of Cheesy Poofs?
Imparts the Bible-inspired storytelling parents and kids have come to expect from VeggieTales in a less obvious but as-fun-as-always package
I have to admit that this animated VeggieTales endeavor is far more entertaining and artistically competent than anything offered in the last two Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
While there's adventure and clever gags... I could have done with a little more silliness and some more songs like 'The Hairbrush Song' and 'Bellybutton.'
[A]n attack by Cheetos dentata... is deeply unsettling in a way I'm not sure a children's movie is supposed to be...
Pirates scores with adventure, humor and a morality tale rather than a standard biblical message.
A gentle adventure-comedy that sails a heroes' journey so straight and true that Joseph Campbell would smile.
I kept hoping someone would arrive on the scene with a Veg-O-Matic and put a stop to it.
Aside from the fun musical scenes, the script is pretty lackluster, and the animation could generously be described as old-fashioned.
This is no savvy Toy Story. It's a boilerplate plot like one you might find in any morning cartoon.
The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything has just enough unassuming cleverness to keep you from checking your watch while the little people in your company get wrapped up in the color and clamor.
Young children appreciate all the bouncing shapes and bright colors (speaking of which, you might wonder why Robert the Terrible is a darker shade of green than any of his relatives), but anyone over six will be bored early and often.
