Synopsis: A spacecraft carrying an assortment of passengers including Riddick (Vin Diesel), a dangerous, shackled murderer between prisons, is forced to make a crash landing on a barren, triple-sunned planet... A spacecraft carrying an assortment of passengers including Riddick (Vin Diesel), a dangerous, shackled murderer between prisons, is forced to make a crash landing on a barren, triple-sunned planet after the craft suffers severe damage during a meteor shower. The ship is ripped into pieces, killing several crew members and leaving meek officer Fry (Radha Mitchell) in charge of the survivors. After two unfortunate deaths, the survivors discover that the only visible life form on the planet is a species of light-fearing, carnivorous, occasionally cannibalistic aliens dwelling in caverns beneath the desert surface. Using a model of the planet and its suns in an abandoned research station, Fry deduces that she and her fellow travellers have unfortunately descended on the planet on the day of its first total eclipse in 22 years, giving them mere hours before they are bathed in total darkness. Only then is it safe for the hungry subterranean creatures to emerge, seeking to feed on the remaining survivors. However, the dangerous Riddick, through black market injections received in lock-up, is able to see in darkness- causing the surviving crew members to reluctantly remain dependent on the potentially harmful criminal. As the survivors are killed one by one by the hungry creatures, they realize that Riddick may be their only hope. [More]

Reviews for Pitch Black
Even though it's riddled with some of the lamest, dumbest dialogue imaginable, Pitch Black is a total guilty pleasure.
If Pitch Black is a likable sci-fi thriller, it's because it has the heart of a cheeseball '70s disaster movie beneath the horror trappings of computer-generated mutant bats and winged demon aliens.
makes a better platform for a beginning astronomy class than action-packed thriller.
Despite far too many video-game moments and annoying taglines, the scifi thriller Pitch Black just may be the most entertainingly derivative movie of the millennium so far.
While Pitch Black offers plenty in terms of cheap thrills and jolting scares, there's little else to justify it as a worthy moviegoing experience.
A filmmaker just can't have it both ways when he decides he wants to make Aliens meets Les Miserables.
Pitch Black is the kind of B-movie you hope to discover regularly but find only once every few years.
[David Twohy] tweaks this formulaic escape-from-hell story with just enough original touches to give it a lift.
In the movie's last hour, writer-director David Twohy pretends to explore his stick figures' moral choices, and he forgets to deliver the thrills.
A noisy, nightmarish waste of time and money, the producers' and yours.
Pitch Black is one of those annoyingly noisy outer-space thrillers where you can't figure out the characters' names at first, and when you finally do, they are either dead or you hate them.
