What Film Ban? The Pursuit of Happyness Reaching Chinese Theaters in January
Will Smith's power transcends trade barriers.
by Jeff Giles | December 21, 2007
Discuss Article
Almost as soon as it started, talk of a rumored Chinese ban on foreign films has been quieted.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Will Smith's The Pursuit of Happyness will reach Chinese screens in January, despite what was supposed to have been a three-month blackout on film imports. The Reporter quotes Yuan Wenqiang, deputy manager of China Film Group Import Export Co., as saying Happyness "is coming in January...We are planning what day to release it."

The article goes on to address some of the Chinese-American squabbles -- such as rampant Chinese film piracy -- that are thought to have contributed to talk of the ban, as well as the advantage of starting rumors versus pursuing legal channels:

"In China, litigation means loss of face," Teng Jimeng, professor of film and American studies at Beijing's Foreign Studies University, said in an interview. "No brothers or partners would go to court to settle disputes. Litigation is the last resort, and they break relationship if litigation occurs. With China unable to break its trade relationship with the U.S. in reality, an unannounced ban is the choice, because it does not cost anything to return to the 'business as usual' state of affairs, say three months later."

Happyness' arrival is welcome news for Chinese theater owners, who rely on imported films for a significant percentage of their receipts. Wayne Zhang, owner of a Beijing theater, tells the Reporter that "Hollywood films have done really well this year, so a lot of theater owners will be happy," qualifying with "Chinese or foreign, we're happy if the movies are good."

I was thinking this morning about a collaboration between Eddie Murphy and Will Smith. The two have similar styles and fan bases, even though Murphy is a generation ahead of Smith. Murphy's dirty/funny, and Smith is more acceptable to a broader audience, and the two together seems like it would be a pretty funny situation.

How about a good old fashioned, 80's cop movie. Murphy could be Nick Nolte to Will Smith's Eddie Murphy. Just leave Micheal Bay and Martin out of it. Make them plain suit cops in the ghettos of Philly or Detroit or something believable.

Murphy could grow a beard like the 70's Bill Cosby, and Will could play more of the wholesome Sidney Poiter.

Who wouldn't want to see that. Plus they could try to put this anti-ghetto attitude out by having a few overly ghetto, gangster rap-addict, crack dealers that they periodically make fun of for being so f-ing stupid and ingnorant. Dave Chapelle or Chris Rock could be the Joe Pesci/Leo character who helps lead them to the truly dangerous neighborhood gansters who they eventually stop from doing something completely henious.

Just make it believable. Show cops making cop salaries, living in real hoods, trying to support their families and better their environment, not just some hollywood version of life. Real bad guys, not international James Bond type of bad guys like in "Bad Boys" and "Lethal Weapon".

Murphy would be the single, older guy still trying to be a player with the ladies like Popeye Doyle, just not as successful as he used to be. Smith could be the complete accidental player, who always declines the kitty because he loves his wife and family. He can't help that the ladies throw the kitty at Will Smith. Hell, if I had a kitty I'd probably throw it at Will myself.

Tell me this wouldn't be huge movie.

Good point. He should just become fat instead of being so lazy and faking it.

thing is this movie already came out in china, like they said before about bootlegs, you could get a good copy of pursuit for about 25 cents in china a few days after it came out in the US, I should know...

Albert there is already a Bad Boys and there is no connection between Eddie Murphy and Will Smith besides the colour of their skin (and even then). They don't have similar styles at all and Murphy would never be able to handle the kind of material expected in that kind of block buster - unless he gets tons of screen time to develop some long-winded fart joke (see what I did there?).

And same fan base? Not at all.

(I meant to say that, it would be impossible to get away from the Bad Boys image - even if you added realism. It's the same idea just less stylistic/Bayish).

Pursuit of Happyness is not a trash movie. It kicked some major *** in the drama department. And Will Smith was nominated for an Oscar. So it had to be better than a piece of trash. A piece of recycling, maybe. But never trash

Odd that they picked the movie most indicative of the American dream, the shows the good side of capitalism along with the bad. Those Chinese censors sure are a wacky bunch.

this is a perfect movie for china actually, you may not know this, but you take the capitalistic spirit in the US, and you multiply it by a billion and you get a general idea of what is running through the minds of every Chinese person, their entire culture these days is based around how to make it in the world market
