Consensus: Riding in Cars With Boys suffers from mixing grit and pathos with cuteness and comedy. Ironically, many critics found Zahn's character more compelling and three-dimensional than Barrymore's.

Ray, however, a sweet-natured but shiftless young man is the exception to her rule and shortly after meeting him she ends up pregnant--at age fifteen. At the wedding insisted upon by her disappointed father, Bev finds out her best friend is also pregnant, and the two console each other for the youth they've lost. RIDING IN CARS WITH BOYS is a true story based on the autobiography by Beverly Donofrio about her youthful days of revelry, rebellion, and teenage motherhood. Drew Barrymore is credible as an Italian-American girl who's far too smart to be stuck where she is in life, but it's Steve Zahn (THAT THING YOU DO, HAPPY, TEXAS) who steals the show in a long-overdue starring turn, with his heartfelt portrayal of a lost little boy who never finds his way to manhood. James Woods is Donofrio's alienated father. And Lorraine Bracco is her supportive, long-suffering mother who looks after the house, Bev's son Jason, and Ray, while Bev desperately tries for her GED and a scholarship to NYU. It's Bev's drive and unflagging ambition--and Penny Marshall's usual surehanded direction--that turn her hardship into the triumph of survival. Eventually, she realizes her own dreams, and her son's. Reviews for Riding in Cars with Boys
Has ‘warm’ moments that seem forced and fake and ‘cold’ moments that push the film into dull melodrama. Not exactly a recipe for a great night out at the movies.
It's never more than a random collection of moments that never pull together.
The film belongs to Zahn, who turns his two-dimensional slacker character into a truly heartbreaking portrait of disillusion and guilt.
Delivers a gentle and understanding slice of Americana while tackling some very tough subject matter.
As a flawed but lovably lionhearted woman, Barrymore triumphantly comes of age as an actress.
It's neither as much fun as it could be, nor as emotionally affecting.
A film like this is refreshing and startling in the way it cuts loose from formula and shows us confused lives we recognize.
Marshall's film, hobbled by a miscalculated and often superficial script by Morgan Upton Ward, is mostly a wasted opportunity.
[Beverly] is a memorable character, a flesh-and-blood creation brought to life by an actress just beginning to hit her stride.
Drew está genial, se gana completamente ser una recomendación completa para la cinta.
Barrymore rises to the occasion in this smart story, which never flinches from the self-doubt and tough decisions a single mother makes along the way.
Left a lot of the book's plot on the cutting-room floor in the transition from the page to the screen.
An insipid story transmitted to the screen, it seems, only to allow Drew and Steve to show what they've got.
It's nothing more than a hot fudge sundae -- warm, syrupy and quickly dissipating into a mess.
Chalks up victories for Drew Barrymore, Steve Zahn, director Penny Marshall, and almost its entire supporting cast.
