Johnny Williams, a house painter by day and poet by night, lives with his devoted wife Mattie. Their Air Force navigator son Jeff has just returned home after a successful tour of duty. But as it turns out, Jeff isn't a veteran at all. He was kicked out of officer's training school for refusing to be an "Uncle Tom." Now that Jeff's home, maybe Mattie will disclose her big secret: she's dying of cancer. To top off their family problems, Johnny's become an alcoholic.
