...an entertaining yet undeniably forgettable romcom that benefits substantially from the stars' charismatic work.

Consensus: Though its sweetness borders on sappiness, Roxanne is an unabashedly romantic comedy that remains one of Steve Martin's funniest.

C.D.... Roxanne (Darryl Hannah) is a beautiful astronomer in search of a comet, and Chris is a hunky but inarticulate fire expert who has been hired to train C.D.'s team of well-meaning firemen. C.D. immediately falls in love with Roxanne but he is sure that she won't notice anything about him except his extremely prominent facial feature and is quick to hide his passionate desires. However, Roxanne has captured the fancy of another, Chris. When C.D. learns of Chris's crush, he uses his gift for poetry to help the inexperienced courtier capture her affections. Wooed by the beauty of the words, Roxanne falls for Chris, not realizing that C.D. was the one really doing the talking. Of course, when put to the test, Chris does not live up to Roxanne's expectations and she quickly learns the identity of her real poetic suitor. Steve Martin is at his agile and uproarious best in this superior version of a classic story that revels in the oddity of life and the power of true love. [More]

Reviews for Roxanne
It's difficult to call a movie this light and insubstantial a classic, but it's as likeable as ever more than two decades after its initial release.
another in a long line of Cyrano De Bergerac adaptations but easily one of the very best
It's a neat trick, being Steve Martin. He's so good; his movies will get even better.
In an era when romance seems to have taken second place to sex, it's heartwarming to see a film like Roxanne bring back the loveliness of love.
The film's success rests firmly with Martin. He wrote the warm-hearted script and delivers a sparkling performance of physical and verbal gymnastics that he hasn't been able to match since.
Far and away [Martin's] richest film to date, lyrical, sweet-natured, touching, and very, very funny.
Terrific and charming "Cyrano" update, with one of Martin's best performances and his best screenplay.
A feel-good movie with some perky riffs on romance, beauty, and the value of an inquiring mind.
