Reviews for Rush Hour
Rush Hour is a real rush: energetic, funny, involving and effortlessly entertaining,
Hollywood calculation can't match the primitive eager-to-please quality that made those Hong Kong films refreshing; they were appealing because they were so free of irony.
The story is still routine, and still predictable, and still unimportant.
As Chan moved from Hong Kong to Hollywood, something got lost in the translation.
Most of it pales in comparison to Chan's earlier movies, which makes one wonder if he might be getting too old for some of the more dangerous fare he might have attempted five or ten years ago. Let's hope not.
Doesn't feature nearly enough Jackie Chan action and has way too much Chris Tucker dialogue.
Sure, the action's there, along with his trademark amazing physical stunts, but in getting the Hollywood treatment, a great deal of the fun stemming from Chan and his "antics" has been lessened.
Chan is as sweet and charming as ever. Tucker makes an excellent foil. And things blow up.
Rush Hour would be a lot more valuable if it were not so heavily based on other successful films, but if you're looking for mindless entertainment, you could do worse.
The contrast between Tucker's motormouth and Chan's man of few words should be funnier, but the plot -- which is cliched without quite becoming self-reflexive -- and the uneven pace dampen most of their moments.
While it's always a rush to see Chan ingratiate himself before the camera, and therefore the audience, this is hardly the showcase for his myriad talents.
