"X-Men 3" Director Talks About X-Pectations

There was lots of hand-wringing and second-guessing among the X-Men fans when "Rush Hour" director Brett Ratner was tapped to helm "X-Men: The Last Stand," but the guy kept his head down and focused on his biggest project to date ... and then sat down for an interview with IGN FilmForce.

IGNFF: Obviously this is a movie where you have a ton of outside analysis going on from the fans. Did you try to set that aside while making the film?

RATNER: Yeah. I mean, when I got the movie, I spoke to Bryan [Singer], and he said, "Let me give you one good bit of advice." I said "okay," and he said, "Don't read Aint it Cool News. I'm like, "Why?" He's like, "They're just gonna talk s*** about you, and they did the exact same thing about me. They did the exact same thing when I did the first X-Men." So I kind of stayed away from it and just focused on making the film.

IGNFF: So what do you think the people criticizing you will say when they actually see the film?

RATNER: Oh, I think they'll be eating crow! I think so. Because the movie came out great. I'm really proud of it.

"X-Men: The Last Stand" opens on the last Friday in May.

didn't the crew from "doom the movie" say the same kind of stuff before the movie came out?

I'll go see X-3 but I don't have high hopes...
If I have to eat crow, I'll be more than glad!

Good advice from Singer
Unless a movie has an extremely negative buzz about it (which this movie does not), directors should ignore online criticism.

I don't think it'll be as bad as some are expecting since the look, characters and basic storyline of the series have already been established by Bryan Singer. Now, if Michael Bay was the director, I'd be worried but so far I haven't seen anything to make me think that X-Men 3 will suck.

Umm...
Ratner seems pretty confident, so he's either really arrogant right about now, or he's absolutely right. I'm leaning towards the former. He's made nothing that would gain anyone's confidence in his directing ability. He borrows other people's visual styles and has none of his own. Red Dragon was a carbon copy of both Manhunter and Silence of the Lambs. He's a hackasaurus, and X3 I'm sure will resemble much of the past two X-films. He can imitate Singer on a surface level, but he can't imitate his mind and how it works. So I'd expect X3 to be a "pod person" of it's predeccessors.
